Inside T Armor Wolfpack Winter War/Second Semester MEGAN BLANCHARD Group shot of the Wolfpack members who attended Winter War. From left to right, starting with the rear row; Ragnar, Magnus, Argylle, Narfi, Cyrus, Saethryth, Alysandir, Aminah (please note these are their fighting names). Mirce GRANT Porto Eprror Two people clad in ar- mor and helms, baring sword and shield pay homage to each other through salute and drop into fight- ing stances, squaring off, wonder- ing which will strike first. This may seam comical or quaint to some, watching others dress up and “play swords”, but when it comes to the fighting, there is nothing comical about it and the skill and training required to take part in Heavy Fighting with a group in the SCA like The Wolf- pack, closely resembles a martial art or boxing. I can say this as I have taken part in more then one martial art and after writing my article on The Wolfpack in Nov- ember for Over The Edge, I de- cided to suit up myself, and find out just what it takes to run with the pack. After joining the pack I -was relived to feel welcome al- most immediately, members tak- ing their time to teach me not only the tricks of the trade, but of the game and its many aspects. From sword form, to character research, to leather working, to heraldry, there has been, and still is, a lot to learn, and in turn different pack members have stepped up ~ to help me along the way, making the UNBC Mid-evil club a very welcoming place for someone wanting to make friends not only on campus or in Prince George, but around Canada and even the world depending on what events you choose to attend. Beyond that, for those worrying about the freshman fifteen or just wanting . a more social way to work out or stay physically. active, if you are interested in the heavy combat aspect of the Wolfpack, from per- sonal experience’l can say it is an amazing full body work out, and as a result this journalist has al- ready dropped one waist size in a month of fighting. : I myself had the honor of standing beside my brothers and sisters in the pack, only a week ago in a drill hall outside of Edmonton in Wetaskawin for an event known as Winter War. There are two main kinds of events that someone atfend with The Pack and SCA, one is a tournament, which may be for anything from recog- nition, to knighthood, to being elevated literally to the status or royalty within the SCA, the other event being a war. In a war there can be two members of royalty meeting in conflict, or opposing armies fighting over land (terri- tory in within the SCA that-group controls) or title. Winter. War hap- pened to be a war between two members of royalty. Many fight- ing and archery groups already fight for a specific royalty and so the side they fight for has already been decided, however many are also mercenaries whom the mem- bers of royalty can purchase or bid for, the head of that mercenary household deciding who his sol- diers will fight for. The Wolfpack is a mercenary household that has always had a habit of fighting for the underdog, and this occasion was no difference. In the war itself a fighter takes place in “the shield wall” behind a large shield or nor- mal shield and forms the front line to protect the pike-men or archers, -all of which are other fighters, normally of higher experience. It is in this manner, as in history, that the battles are fought in different scenario locations, such as keeps, fields, bridges, boats, or beaches, by men (and women) in lines or formations, marching or charging towards the enemy line, or holding your ground against the charge. This is not all an SCA event consists of however, as there are also Rapier (fencing) scenarios of combat, bardic (sing- ing/musical/entertainment) com- petitions, brewing and/or cooking competitions, feasts, royal court, merchants, heralds, target arch- ery competitions, and even arts and science competitions. All of which one can take part in through The Wolfpack. If you enjoy the idea of the role-playing aspect of the Wolfpack but don’t like the idea of combat, please feel free to stop by the Tuesday or Thursday practices at 7:30 in the Rotunda in the old lab building and gather some information on any of the above, or if you see anyone you’ know in The Wolfpack, or even if you don’t know them but have seen them in armor or garb, be- fore feel free to ask them as Pack members are normally happy to get more people interested. If you wish to join you have no obliga- tion to be Heavy Fighter, nor does it mean you are limited to one spe- cific area, but as one of UNBC’s oldest clubs, as well as one of its largest, The Wolfpack is always looking for new members and more interest: The Wolfpack also plan on holding movie nights and open tournaments once a month when possible as well as opening up our table, where they may have not only armor, but garb, leather working, and other items dis- OVER THE EDGE February 28, 2007 Winter Frost Ball AMBER L. RICHARDS STAFF WRITER The Winter Frost Ball that NUGSS put on felt like you were at your high school prom again. Minus all the hassle and groups that no one wanted to be near since they hated one another. Men in their tuxes and women in their dresses just seemed like a perfect night. Minus the snow and the cold, it was awesome. The only thing that I thought was kind of dumb was that they had a jazz band there. I have nothing really wrong to say about jazz music, but when you are trying to dance to it, it doesn’t work out very well. The DJ that they hired seemed that he was there early since I did see him pig out at the buffet that was there and then took forever to get his act together and play some dance music. The Winter Frost ball was hosted by students who are trying to put on a health centre that is run by them for free (CHINUCS). They did a lovely job with their slide show to show us, the stu- dents, what is going on and what they do. When you walked into the room, there were lights and stars everywhere. It was romantic. The buffet was filled with the normal assortment of food. There was chicken, beef, steak, mashed po- tatoes, salads and the usual fruit. The dinner was filling for a 15 dollar ticket. It was perfect. As some of you already know, when you bought your ticket from NUGGS, your ticket had‘a num- ber on it which entered you into a draw for door prizes. Some of the prizes were okay. One prize, a spice rack, was for a couple. that could do the “spiciest” dance. Be- fore they did those small prizes, the first prize went to one of the NUGGS people. I myself was the first non-member of NUGGS to win a prize, a Johnny Cash CD. Other prizes were “gold plat- ed” watches and of course gift © certificates. In the end, it was great to see all my friends and school mates dress up and have a great time. Thanks NUGGS for putting on another great dance for us. “You're Fired!” - The UNBC Donald Trump AMBER L. RicRARDS STAFF WRITER Congratulations to Deanna who is now the new UNBC Ap- prentice, a result of her hard work and team dedication. Welcome to this years UNBC Apprentice. The game’s goal was to determine who gets to work for -“the Trump” in the end. This year it was consisted of three teams. Team one; named Team Super- star were Sarah, Amanda, Leah . and Rebecca. Team two; named Team Awe- some was Jonathan, Jay, Reena and Olivia. Last but not least was Team Three, named The Purple People Eaters. Although only one team was going to win, each person left with something in their hands. Working very hard to see who would win, day one was probably the most challenging to watch. Monday was both presentation day and the Breast Cancer dona- tion day. All donations went to the Breast Cancer society and raised the most I have seen just coming from a University in a long time, totalling $1324.06. Tuesday was a fun day. No presentations to worry about, al- though there was a team to be fired. Team two was the first to leave. Since everyone got a prize in the end, they left with CSS Cof- fee mugs. Day three was a presentation day. The presentation goal was to try and get students’ attention to come to UNBC for the fall se- mester. Thursday, day four, was yet another firing day. Team Superstar got fired, leaving with CSS clip- boards and $25 gift certificates as consolation prizes. Day five, which landed on Friday, was the last day to battle everything out to see who would be the next apprentice. The team had already won CSS jackets but Deanna Won received an I-Pod Nano, $50 towards I-Tunes and 2 tickets to the Rugby party. Congratulations.for those who tried out.
