Statistics show that very few cars skid on icy streets in New York City in midsummer. But that’s what happened on the hottest day of the year in 1949. A taxicab driven by Arthur Irise crashed into another taxi. Irise explained to police that his cab had skidded on ice that had fallen from a truck. He was advised to put on chains. Probably the biggest fistic upset of the year was the one-round en- counter between Ricky Peloquin and his father Ralph at Berlin, N.H., In this corner, wearing white diapers and still champion at the age of seven months, is Ricky. In this corner, wearing a black and blue temple and a sheepish look, is Pelo- quin Sr. The father, an ardent fight fan, was fastening a pair of tiny sou- venir gloves on Ricky when one of the gloves fell to the floor. As Pelo- quin stooped to pick it up, Ricky swept a six-pound coin-filled piggy bank off the tray of his highchair. The bank bopped Pop on the temple and he was out cold. SURE-FIRE BISCUITS Mrs. Lowell Long is used to hear- ing her neighbors in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, say that her biscuits are always sure-fire. Nonetheless, she was startled when shots rang out from the hot oven into which she had just pop- ped a pan of dough. Then she re- membered that when the family left on a recent vacation, two revolvers had been hidden in the stove. Fully aware that things are tough all over, police in Sacramento, Calif., nevertheless were surprised to get a report that an automobile had picked the pocket of a pedestrian and es- caped with $102. ‘The victim, W. T. Taylor, had walked too close to a moving car. His coat pocket— wallet and all_—was ripped off by the auto and carried away. “Gateway to the Great North Country” Gateway Hotels Ltd. But Celia Slavens of Champaign, Ill., high school band, actually did it. She twirled her baton so energetically it smacked her in the head and knocked her cold. Many people don’t like to be framed. But five-year-old Douglas Sturmoski of Milwaukee is glad it happened to him. Doug was sit- ting on his tricycle on the sidewalk in front of his home when a panel truck overturned on him after it had been struck by a car. It looked bad for Doug until rescuers lifted the heavy vehicle—to find Doug and his tricycle neatly and safely framed by an open window of the truck. The opening was just large enough to enclose boy and tricycle as the truck fell. EVENED THINGS UP Bob Akers and his nose spent a busy but unpredictable afternoon afternoon while playing softball at the University of Cincinnati one day last spring. First, the nose was hit and broken by a grounder. Bob re- tired disconsolately to the bench. A little later a batter hit a ball so hard the bat broke. A piece of the bat struck Bob smack on his aching Gateway Groceteria “Quality First’ Member Associated Merchants of B.C. Groceries, Produce, Etc. Quaker Full-o-Pep Feeds Ashcroft B.C. H.
