The guard was grinning when
Lowe emerged, “old man kind of
liverish this morning?” he suggested
amiably.

For the next ten worrying, unsuc-
cessful days Lowe searched the town
for some clue as to King’s movements
there the previous summer. At last
some hunch sent him to a saddler’s
shop on Kinistino Avenue, where a
man with tattooed arms was mending
a pair of traces—wearing a sewing-
palm upon one hand.

“What’s that thing,” Lowe asked
casually, recalling young Moonias’
story of the man with the gunstock
and the fingerless glove.

“That,” grinned the saddler, “is a
sewing-palm. Learned to use one when
I was a sailor.”

“Séll many of them?” inquired the
Mountie.

“No,” the tatooed man _ replied.
“Last one I sold in August to some
guy going up Peace River way. He
stuck around a couple of days sewing
canvas panniers for his pack-horses.”

Convinced he was at last on the
trail of the missing Leman, Lowe
scoured the stores in an effort to
locate a man who’d bought a con-
siderable quantity of canvas the pre-
vious August, only to give up in
disgust when he learned it was an
article sold every day. Then the
Brands Inspector at Medicine Hat re-
ported that no “Diamond C” brand

beaten trader at the Hudson’s Bay
fort remembered selling it. “Been
here for years,’ he said as he ran
through the blotter. “Ah! here we are:

trap—and a list of grub. He paid by
cheque.

“Let’s see it.” Lowe’s pulses were
pounding hard.

dug out a canceled cheque for $250
on the Bank of Montreal at Nelson,
B.C., returned there in care of Hay-
ward but never delivered to him, and
signed by Edward Hayward. “Say,”
he exclaimed, “what’s all the excite-
ment about, anyway?”

But Lowe, with the cheque in the
pocket of his scarlet tunic, was
striding towards the flats to make a
round of the hotels, his mind in a
whirl. Was this Hayward, the so-
called Leman, of King’s story? Here
was a break indeed! At the Edmonton
Hotel another break awaited him
when he found on the register for
August 14 the names of Charlie
King and Edward Hayward, and
learned that their trunks were still in
the basement for safe-keeping.

With his heart beating a tattoo
against his ribs he knelt before a
trunk marked “C.K.” and drew from
his pocket the keys seized from King,
realizing how much might hinge on
the next few moments. The first key
didn’t fit. The second was equally
useless. The third shot back the bolt
and displayed to his disappointed gaze
only a few of King’s old clothes, some
letters from Salt Lake City, and the
stub of a railroad ticket from Mac-
leod to Edmonton dated August 13.
Another key opened Hayward’s trunk,
disclosing some ship’s papers and dis-
charge certificates, indicating that the
man had been a sailor; a letter from
