Credited With Magic Powers

He escaped ambush so often that
he was credited with magic powers.
But his sordid career was brought to
an end by treachery.

One day in December, 1854, he was
about to set off in a canoe for Kuper
Island to murder a man and steal his
handsome wife. His daughter pleaded
with him not to go. “The owl has
hooted,” she said—a sign of death.
Tzouhalem shrugged it off.

On the journey the paddlers secret-
ly drew the charge from his musket.
He strode into the big hall among the
Lamalchas of Kuper, picked a quarrel
with the man he meant to kill, and
pressed the trigger. Nothing hap-
pened. Tzouhalem, snarling, drew his
knife and backed against a_ pillar.

Hidden behind the pillar was the
woman he meant to steal. She reached
around and pinned him against the
post with a clam stick. Her husband
came at Tzouhalem swinging a Hud-
son’s Bay axe, as yelling warriors
crowded around. In a minute, the
killer’s head was severed.

They bore the head triumphantly
on a pole, then used it for a football.
Tzouhalem’s enemies cut him open
“to see what made him so wicked.”
They reported that his “intestines
were not coiled as in other men,” and
that he had a heart “the size of a
salmon’s heart.” Excitement and
superstition very likely fogged over
the facts here, but it is possible that
Tzouhalem was internally deformed
as well.

A daughter of Tzouhalem tried to
rescue the body. She was pushed aside
by angry men and women who were
determined to hack it to pieces. The
woman ran to the woods and hanged
herself. According to legend, thunder
crashed that night as it had done on
the night of Tzouhalem’s birth.

The squaw who had pinned the
murderer to the post was feted as a
heroine in Victoria.

Tzouhalem’s lust for blood reached
out from the grave when a erand-
nephew of his sought revenge years
later at Ladner. He shot two grand-
daughters of the woman who had cap-
tured him. One died, and the man
went to prison for 14 years.

White man’s justice had never
touched Tvouhalem in an age when
Indians slaughtered one another with
little restra.nt. But it did at least
punish one who had killed in his

name. > *

A sale of work raised £40 towards
the cost of repairing Hintlesham
(Suffolk) Parish Church. Later, thieves
drove up in a lorry and stripped £80
worth of lead from the church roof.
