Athletic Association, IAs, C5 HE year’s achievements in athletics have been very creditable. Under the able management of Mr. E. E. Mower both the Junior and the Senior Football Teams have won distinction, the Seniors carrying off the Timberland Cup, emblematic of the championship of the Chilliwack Valley League, and the Juniors bringing home the Menzies Hardware Cup, having scored a total of twenty-seven points throughout the year, with only one point against them. More gratifying almost than these tangible trophies was the tribute paid our boys by Rev. Cannon Holdom, who, in his speech at the Football Banquet in Chillwack, stated that he had never in all his experience refereed a more sportsmanlike game than the final between Coqualeetza and the High School. Both the Boys’ and the Girls’ Basketball Teams have been fairly active, though, due to the fact that they were rather late in getting started they have played more practice than match games. Ms. George Martin was a capable coach. An interesting innovation this year is the Archery Club, formed at a meeting held for that purpose on the 12th of April, 1929. The Club has a membership of 37, 23 girls, with Betty Barton for their Captain, and 10 boys, with Captain, Cyril Mahone, and 4 staff members. At the first meet the target was rarely hit, but great improvement followed upon practice. The champion of the girl’s team was Emily Leo, while George Auckland headed the boys, closely followed by Allan Hall. CAKKYS IMianete REVIOUS achievement has given the Coqualeetza Music Department a very high standard to main- tain, but we feel we can conscientiously report that this has been done, and creditably done, during the 1928-1929 session. In the first place, of the nine candidates who tried the Royal Academy of Music Examinations last spring, nine were successful, Rosalind Watson signally so, attaining honour ranking. The following are preparing for the 1929 Royal Academy Exams.: Prano— Lower Division Ruth Castle Edna Tait Elementary Division Rosalind Watson Luke Nelson Primary Division Mercy Wesley Mildred Russ Viotin—Higher Division Clarence Wesley Dorothy Matheson The music class is of average dimensions this year—twenty-two pupils studying piano under the tuition of Miss Milsom, Mrs. Edstrom, Mrs. Orr and Miss M. K. Clarke; three taking violin from Mrs. Edstrom; and two learning to play the saxophone, under the instruction of Mr. Ridley of Chilliwack. The Choir continues to make good progress under the splendid training of Mr. Bartindale. In addition to the regular weekly anthem they have contributed special music on occasions such as Christmas and Easter, with great success. Under the able leadership of Mr. Shergold the Boys’ Bugle Band has been revived this year, and they have got on so well that we felt them a distinct credit to the institution when they performed officially in connection with the forming an escort for the Australian Boys on their recent visit. We are most grateful to Mr. Shergold for his generous contributions of time, interest and energy in connection with this Band, and also for his gift to the School of a melophone and a Bass Drumhead for our Orchestra. The Orchestra continues to flourish, and does much good work, adding greatly to the various school affairs with its contributions, as well as accepting occasional invitations to play for outside organizations.
