Phone 9 Page Twelve Mountie, Dale of Cawsalta, was pur- chased in 1935. Dale, a German Shepherd, was owned by Sergeant John Cawsey and first came into prominence in 1933 when he tracked an Indian through new-fallen snow from a burgled car to a cabin five miles away. When the case went to court the dog’s evidence was not admitted because the visible track had been broken in several places. Later Dale repeated his perform- ance by finding a missing two-year-old girl in an abandoned farm field. Mounties Have 15 Dogs This achievement decided the Ottawa officials and they purchased Dale from Cawsey, who became the force's first dogmaster. Later a kennel was established at Regina to train the canine constables in police work and today the Mounties have fifteen Police Service Dogs and two dog- training kennels. Since they were first adopted the dogs have proven their worth many times over and some of their feats have become legendary. A Doberman Pinscher named Perky took up a trail at a still and followed it to a nearby farmhouse where he picked out the moonshiner from among seven people. Another canine constable back- tracked a moonshiner’s dog to find a hidden still. Dog Retrieves Nitroglycerine A police dog in Alberta surprised his master by setting out in pursuit of a band of safecrackers and returning with a bottle of nitroglycerine which the men had discarded. Bachue, the first Rottweiler regis- tered in Canada, followed the 24-hour old track of a wagon used in a granary theft—the first time the trail of a vehicle had ever been followed by a dog. “Good law-enforcement dogs,” ac- cording to Corporal Lee, an instructor at the Rockcliffe Kennels, “are born, not made.” Lee claims that desired qualities which are noticed in the dog’s puppy days are encouraged and developed by endless patience and _ teaching, creating “a perfect understanding be- tween man and animal.” é So thorough is the schooling given the dogs that untrained animals worth $35 have emerged from the 80-lesson course with a market value of from $500 to $1,000. King Edward Hotel (Newly Renovated) Commercial and Tourist House Bus Depot - Coffee Shop in Connection * Fernie British Columbia Rugged Training During the nine months’ course the dogs repeat their lessons over and over again, learning to obey com. mands, to scramble over Straight board fences 10 feet high, to jump through open windows and_ over barbed wire fences, to climb ladders and search box-cars. Among other things the dogs are taught to dodge blows and, on the order “Hag,” to throw down or trip and guard a fleeing criminal. While they can be mean customers in a rough and tumble, the dogs are not vicious and will never attack unless their quarry makes a hostile move. Even then they are taught to go for an arm or leg and not for a man’s throat. When the dogs misbehave, which is often during the early stages of their training, they are punished by being made to crawl a few feet on their stomachs. There was one case where a dog, searching for a lost object in an open field, took out after a rabbit. Almost out of sight of his master before he remembered what he was supposed to be doing, the dog got down and crawled before returning to the job. In another instance a canine pupil escaped from his kennel and was eventually found all alone on the training ground going over his lessons. President Secretary Richard Gregory Charles J.
