Jerry Kinkade Page Sixty desparadoes they were, they stopped their car and Fawcett unlimbered his rifle, a Savage 250-3000. He took care- ful aim and fired. One headlight on the car behind went out. Ellis, realizing that he was un- der more than pistol fire, braked his vehicle to a screeching stop and threw himself into the ditch by the roadside, from where he returned the fire with his .38 calibre Police Positive. Fawcett fired several more shots, hitting the police car each time. Ellis emptied his revolver but knew his efforts were futile as he saw the bandits’ car start, and its tail lights fade into the distance. However, he got back into the police car and took after them. In the meantime back at the theatre someone arrived with a car, and some- one else produced a rifle, so the pur- suit got under way. At the same time Ellis was following Bagley and Fawcett through Westview and on to- wards Stillwater, a distance of 20 miles from Powell River. He and the car with Clark and the others, arrived at the end of the road practically at the same time. The empty Ford stood steaming at the edge of the water, but there was no trace of its occupants. Later, a resident in a nearby house said he heard an outboard start and fade away. ‘The dense coastal woods and under- brush in that area were searched by police and game wardens for days, until finally the hide-out was dis- covered near the shore of Jervis Inlet. Empty cans and a heap of paper covers of dynamite sticks fur- nished mute testimony as to the kind of men who had occupied the camp some days before. A spent rifle bullet was discovered in the wall of a house near Westview, in the line of Fawcett’s fire, the day following the robbery and carefully preserved by the police. Months later Fawcett was arrested Williams & Keeble Ltd. “Everything in Hardware” * PARKSVILLE B.C. PORT MOTORS LTD.
