October 12, 1998 ARTS Over The Edge Page 7 Vanilla Ice Hard to Swallow Republic / Universal baaack.....and is he ever incredibly differen’t than the Vanilla Ice which we all remember from “Ice Ice Baby.” Having _ totally denounced his previous image, Ice (aka. Rob Van Winkle) claims that he didn’t really like and wasn’t really responsi- ble for the image which he previously brought to all of us. He places the baggy pants, _ hair slicked back image on the record companies who he claims moulded him into it, going as far as rewriting his bio overnight without his concent. The image worked as he previously capped the charts at number one with “Ice Ice Baby” at thirteen million copies. Finally on the tragic night of his over- dose, he almost lost his life and woke up to the fact that something was graviey wrong in his life. Telling himself that he had more self discipline than he was displaying, he thanked God for a second chance, tat- tooed a leaf on his chest and turned over a new leaf. In short, he tumed his life and his image around virtually overnight. So Rob got married, has a baby girl, Dusti Rain, and cherish- es his time with his fam- ily. Hard to Swallow tells the story which Rob needed to get out. He sings about his drug experiences in “Zig Zag Stories”, busts up his previous image in “Too Cold”, a beautifully nasty reprise of “Ice Ice Baby.” “Fuck Me” lets the world know that he is aware of how he has been previously per- cieved and that he takes the blame for it. Taking an approach using Skate Rock, which he claims is not Heavy Metal, not Hip Hop and not Rock n’ Roll, he creates a unique sound which is to be found by combin- ing the sounds of Kom, Limp Bizkit, and Rage Against the Machine.” The end product actual- ly sounds more like what Rage Against the Machine is doing, with Ice’s cool, crisp rap’s breaking through the heavy background. So _ with his regretful life left behind, Vanilla Ice is ready to get going again, and has changed unbeliev- ably well. His message to us is to “Sit back and enjoy the music. Fuck Vanilla Ice. Just enjoy the music”. This is the stan- dardized rage which the eels denounced at Lollapalooza but hey, it takes all kinds... Sepultura Against Roadrunner / Attic SP le sel R” Still all rage and fury, Sepultura isn't going to dissapoint their fans with their new CD, Against. Produced by the same Ross Robinson who has done behind the boards work with Korn; Sepultura has accomplished a serious sound, this time with aparent subtle con- tributions of styles from the Orient. Sepultra has always strived to push themselves to new lim- its in the loud, industrial rock scene and to give each of their records a different sound from the last. On Sepultrua’s previous CD, Roots, they used a South Wish you had some coo/ tunes? No cash? No Problem! American sound, trying to portray different parts of South America, espe- cially the art which can be found there. Now they are on a global trip, - moving from place to » place around the world, jamming with any tradi- tional style of music they can find. Although Sepultura finds political acitvism to be impor- tant, they restrain them- selves from becoming full-time activists since they claim that it “con- fuses people, and your intentions become blurred.” Certainly the band has had a clear vision of what they hope to produce each time they record a new CD, something which is especially important in a world of stereotypes. This promitory style tends to take the edge off of Sepultura’s harsh sound but don’t think that in changes their style. Against is as harsh as Sepultura has ever been. Industrial at it’s best. Just what are they against? Just about everything: “The more | see, the more | hate... The more | try the less | get... Don't do that / | knew it, What the fuck / You blew it. Against!” below and return it to the Over The Edge office by noon, Friday, October 30th, 1998 and you'll be entered to win a six pack of the CD’s shown heres ‘Brought fo you by Over The Edge & UNIVERSAL R ¥ a UNIVERSAL MUSIC
