NEWS THE OLD AND THE NEW DEASE RIVER BRIDGE. There were a lot of disappointed citizens of Cassiar the weekend of June llth, as their trips South to Telegraph Creek were disrupted with the collapse of the Dease River Bridge. The Dept. of Highways crews were busy the whole weekend recover- ing truck, trailer and heavy equip- ment which went into the river with the collapse of the bridge. While on the job, Mr. Ken White, foreman of the Dease Lake Mainten- ance camp was injured and I hear is able to get around. Keep off that leg Ken and soon you will be on the job again. The bridge crew is already at the bridse and work has already begun clearing away the old span. J. Rattray from the Good Hope Lake Maintenance camp tells us if all goes well, the new Dease River Bailey span will again be in use two or three weeks from now. At present those who must go back and forth across the river must do so by boat. Jock also tells us that there are improvements along the Cassiar Road from the Alaska Highway Junct- jon. Work crews are in the vrocess of re-surfacing the road to within one mile of Cassiar, with the last mile or two to be straightened out at the south east end of town. If we stay around Cassiar long enouth, we mav see a complete vaved Cassiar Road for the future. We now have ten miles of black top along the Sand Flats near Blue River. Sunday July 4th, saw the open- ing of the new Dease River Bridge. There were many cars, trucks and campers waiting on both sides of the bridge. Truckers who drive the Dease Road towards Telegranh Creek and south of the Stikine River will be very busv the next while catch- ine un on freight shivments. For the manv veovle of Cassiar who have not as vet driven the Stewart Hishwav, the mountains, lakes, rivers and streams are just heautiful. A lot of Cassiarites should wander down the Stewart Hizhwav for a drive to see the wond- erful countrv we have here in North- ern British Columbia, and for those without overnicht facilities there is a motel, The Jack & Jill, at Nease Lake, a auarter mile south of the Teleeranh Creek turoff, which has rooms end a cafe. Drive care- fully. CASSIAR ELEMENTARY JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Construction on the new school addition is progressing well. The new addition adds two new class- rooms which will be used for Home Economics and Industrial Arts. Plus an addition to the existing gyn, giving the school a regulation size gym which will be an asset to the boys and girls of our community. (Sorry folks, no 11 and 12 this year.) Completion of the school is ex- pected to be at the beginning of the fall term, making our school one of the most modern in this northern region. Page 6
