oldsnap Music Fest January 26 - F 2 Tyter CLARKE PropuctTion COORDINATOR Those who missed the annual summer Prince George Folk- fest are in luck this year, as organizer Jo Beattie is presenting the first winter Folkfest, an event she’s called the Coldsnap 2008 Music Festival, taking place January 26 to February 2. “Tt’s better for Prince George because not many people leave at the end of January... It’s been in my mind for a while, with preliminary planning in hopes of it being an option,” Beattie said. “You don’t get the niceness of the summer outdoors, but you get more intimate settings and get to be more part of the show.” The music festival will feature many local artists, in addi- tion to out of town artists including but not limited to country band The Cruzeros, Seattle group Leroy Bell and His Only Friends, and folk-rock musician Cara Luft, who played Prince George’s Artspace, the venue above Books and Company on Third Avenue, last summer. These artists will perform at various venues throughout Prince George, with the main stage being set up at Vanier Hall, Prince George Playhouse, Artspace, and the Civic Centre, on five separate nights. Main stage shows will cost $25 each, or $60 for three, whereas shows at other smaller venues, such Coldsnap Quiz: Which Show is as Pizzarico’s on Third Avenue, vary depending on the venue. An in-depth schedule of shows is available at www.cold- snapfestival.com. Beattie said that aside from a few potential changes, the schedule has been finalized. One of the main reasons Beattie had for presenting the fes- tival in the winter, aside from sponsorship issues, was the chance to attract a different, more UNBC and CNC-centered audience. “Generally speaking, Prince George is a country-rock sound, and there’s more of an indie crowd around UNBC and CNC students,” Beattie said. In order to help meet these indie needs, several local indie- rock bands, including Jeremy Stewart and The Rest, and The Concerns of Royalty, among others, have been selected to play throughout the festival. In addition to this, February 2 will see a night of all indie music called The Big Indie at the Artspace venue. Artists at this event include Maurice, Said the Whale, Dan Mangan, Melissa McLelland, and Prairie folk-rock singer Cara Luft. A tip Beattie has for Prince George music fans is to get your tickets early, because the Prince George music scene tends to be unpredictable. In keeping with the strong UNBC focus, PGPIRG is help- ing with The Big Indie, as well as CFUR taking its place as a media sponsor. UNBC staff and faculty, including most nota- bly Greg Beattie, Maria Walsh, and Heather Smith are also some of the key volunteers. First Nations artist Leela Gilday’s performance January 31 at Artspace is being sponsored by the UNBC Wellness Centre and First Nations Centre. “We'd really benefit from getting the tickets sold early. Prince George is unpredictable and who knows if the show will be sold out,” Beattie said. Tickets are currently for sale at Books and Company, Studio 2880 on 15th Avenue. Coldsnap artist Cara Luft.
