A UBaS aR, Ave et Federal and Provincial Emission and Ambient Air legislation is discussed as applicable to the Cassiar operations. To date, no asbestos emission standard exists in Canada, Cassiar emissions, both fugitive and point source type, are estimated and discussed for the years 1970 to 1976. The major pollutant is of the particulate variety, net tons per year of point source dusts decreasing as control equipment is installed and net tons per year of fugitive dusts increasing with mining tonnage. Insofar as % emissions to tons mined is concerned, a six fold decrease is expected by 1976 compared to 1970 values, that is from 0.29% to 0.05%, Certain installations already planned or under construction at Cassiar make these objectives possible, By 1976, it is anticipated that the large portion (almost 88%) of total dust losses will be from uncontrolled sources (open dumps at the mine) that may be considered normal to any open pit mining operation, Losses to atmosphere from material trans- portation to the Millsite are not considered significant enough to warrant stringent control measures. Source emission controls will have been installed where feasible by 1976 and are expected to meet or exceed provincial standards at such areas. A discussion of monitoring results from Cassiar is provided.
