Spanton, known to his associates in the R.C.M.P. as “the man who guarded Gouzenko“ has been transferred to Vancouver from his post at Kamloops. Inspector Spanton, who at 46 is one of the younger commissioned officers in the force, was one of several officers who guarded Russian cipher clerk Igor Gouzenko following his disclo- sures of Red spying activities in this country. Before taking charge of the Kam- loops detachment he made his head- quarters in Whitehorse. He is an honorary aide-de-camp to Governor General Vincent Massey and is active in the Boy Scout movement. The appointment reunites two veteran members of the force. Supt. George J. Archer, officer command- ing Vancouver subdivision, served for some years with Inspector Spanton in ‘Toronto.
