The Mexican Rap/Rock band Molotov is proud of their political orientation. Singing controversial songs speaking out abou police brutality, politica corruption, and racism the four piece band has been banned venues by the authori ties in the past. A unrelated DJ was eve threatened by Police for playing their songs i the past. Possibly the key differ ence between the lyrics of Molotov is that they don’t bar the language which they use. Life Li ke-Dig Radiouniverse / Universal Dig is another contem- porary rock album try- ing to make it big in a sea of contemporary music today. They just might do it too. Possessing a rhythm which makes their tunes mellow to the ear and relaxing to listen to, they tend to remind one of a mixture of Sloan and Godsmack. The songs are all of a medium tempo. Steady music which ranges from the melancholy antics of the title track “Life Like” to the precise engineered sound in “Live in Sound’. It's fun music. Don’t know about that. $$ 7 If you’re not really interested in going out and purchasing every single one of Mariah Carey’s discs, but nev- which you are looking for. #1’s is a greatest hits CD [although Mariah claims that it is too soon for one] and so it may not be “Mariah’s songs which you like best,” but instead, “the songs which netted the most Mariah-#1’ S Columbia / EMI ' Believe’, spins on radio stations all over.” The majority of Mariah’s songs tend to stick to her slow, “loungy” R&B style which she is recently so well renowned _ for. There are a few tracks which go back to her older style including ‘I'll be There” and “Dreamlover’. However, the CD does contain a couple of interesting bonus tracks including “When You which she sang with Whitney Houston for the “Prince of Egypt” soundtrack and “Sweetheart” because guess what? Mariah still doesn’t have one! Or so she wants us to believe... Centrifugal Force - Matter Uforia/Factor Not really knowing what to expect from this relativiey new group, | decided to keep my ears open and my mouth shut for a while as | tried to deciper the meaning of CF’s melodies. The cut’s are, in fact, extremely sensual. Lead vocalist Colin Doroschuk has_ an incredibley sweet voice and recites some great lyrics which are more poetry than anything the music tends to compliment the lyrics. That is, where a certain feeling or atti- tiude is relayed to the listener via the lyrics, the music intensifies those feelings tenfold, to give the listener a true sense of exactly what the writer is trying to get accross. There is heavy use of synthesiz- ers and sampling. Anna Mizera lends an exce- lent backing with her soprano vocals in “And Death Shall Have No Dominion.’ Centrifugal Force is a classic example of new- age music. They use all of the latest sound gen- erating and manipulat- ing methods which suit their needs as well as using common instru- ments. The result is most often a weird [but cool] “The Cold Green Element’ sort of musical background, compli- mented by the ultra- expressive vocals which Doroschuk enchanting- ly adds to each tune.
