Page Twenty-eight sidered, therefore, as anything but an economic asset to the tribe. To such an extent had this prac- tise been carried out that there was a decided shortage of young women amongst them. Consequently, the rising generation of young hunters, when they desired mates, were some- times forced to follow the ancient caveman custom of obtaining their women from some other man by force. Since the approved Cogmollock method of disposing of the super- fluous husband was to despatch him with a quick stab, or a bullet, in the back when he was off guard and least suspecting, many blood feuds had ensued. In one such feud 18 Eskimos had fallen and Inspector Stuart T. Wood, Officer Commanding the Western Arctic Division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at his bleak headquarters on Herschel Is- land, had decided it was about time to take prompt and energetic action. A Conspiracy Meanwhile, what was worrying Tatamagama was how Kupak’s hus- band, Pugnana, could be gotten rid of so that he could take her to his igloo. At last he confided his troubles to his 18-year-old nephew, Ali- goomiak. They would take Pugnana out caribou hunting and, in the ex- citement of the chase, one of them would slip behind and shoot him in the back. Would Aligoomiak agree? If so he’d give him one of those won- derful death-dealing rifles that the traders had brought to the land of the Cogmollocks, and which sold for 20 white fox pelts apiece. With such a tempting prize before him, the sloe- eyed youngster did not take long to make up his mind and ere the em- purpled domes of the igloo village hove in sight arrangements for the disposal of Pugnana were complete. A few days later Tatamagama and his nephew left the village in com- pany with Pugnana and struck out towards the mainland in search of game. ‘Topping a wind-swept ridge they ran into a herd of cariboo who gazed at them in round-eyed amaze- ment. Next second, with a flick of their tails, they were off. As Pugnana and Tatamagama dis- charged their rifles and rushed to- wards the ridge Aligoomiak fell be- hind and pulled the trigger of his Winchester. The whip-like crack of the rifle was followed by a strangled cry from Pugnana as he pitched for- TOURISTS ... For a moment his feet drummed the frozen snowdrifts and then with q convulsive shudder he lay still. Leaving the body to be devoured by ravening wolves and foxes, they returned to the village and explained how Pugnana had “shot himself”! Without the slightest resistance Tata- magama moved into Kupak’s igloo and took possession of the dead man’s belongings, his hunting gear, and his wife. Child Disturbed His Sleep There remained but one cloud on the Eskimo’s horizon. The presence of Pugnana’s _ nine-months-old daughter whose cries disturbed his rest at night. Again Aligoomiak was approached. This time he was to receive three boxes of cartridges for his new rifle if he’d rid his uncle’s igloo of the child. The deal was closed and ere many days had passed a rawhide cord in Aligoomiak’s hands had despatched the child into the Unknown and Tatamagama’s repose was no longer disturbed. Slowly the moccasin telegraph— the grapevine of the North—carried the story a thousand miles westward across the ice-fields from one cluster of Eskimo igloos to another until, at last, it reached the ears of In- spector Wood of the Mounted Police on the blizzard-swept chunk of mud and glacial ice called Herschel Island. * *& * * * When six months later the stern- wheeled Mackenzie River chugged into Fort Norman, near the rim of the Arctic Circle, with jangling signal bells and fluttering pennants the first man up the gang-plank was my old trail companion of the Silent “ZENITH” BRAND McLean & Fitzpatrick Limited Growers — Packers — Shippers Okanagan Valley Fruits and Vegetables KELOWNA—OLIVER—OSOYOOS, B.C.
