The retreat went into re- ceivership in August, when the owners failed to repay loans to a private lender and the provincial government. Provincial govern- ment spokesperson Larry Vincent confirms that a court appointed Receiver Manager will not be able to keep the resort open. The re- ceiver had hoped to run the hill while he looked for buyers. “He needed loans to get the equipment ready and buy supplies” said Vincent. “He needed loans to get the equipment ready and buy supplies” said Vincent. The request for a provincial guar- antee for the loans was turned down by the treasury board. Be- cause of this the resort will not open this season. No one is sure what this will mean to the people who have already purchased sea- son tickets. After a grueling training camp at Whistler Mountain, the resolu- tion of several contract holdouts, and the acquisition of another top Russian star, the UNBC hockey team began their exhibition sched- ule in the Prince George Recre- ation League with high hopes. These hopes were soon dashed. One problem was unfamiliarity: many new players weren’t used to playing with each other. Another problem was the team had no pucks. The main problem was definitely the coaching staff: there wasn’t one. Still, every game was close, and, being composed en- tirely of UNBC students, the team was definitely smarter than ail competitors. Now, with league games begin- ning, the puck is starting to bounce their way. A recent match against Canfor/Custom Stitch Devils wit- nessed a 9-3 blowout in favor of UNBC. Goal tending was superb forwards were passing the puck, defencemen were clearing the front of the net, and the sold-out crowd was treated to three periods of impressive hockey. The team also didn’t back down when Canfor would vent its frustration with unsportsmanlike play. Players include James Doucette, Kris Hicke, Trent Turner, Dwayne Anderson, Darren Hynes, Dave Cullen, Jaime Dewinitz, Dave Chiarello, Duncan Moss, Kurt Budeshein, Chad Lamarche, Jason Morris, and Kevin McKamey. Every player is.an integral part of the team, and morale is currently high: the team has every intention of making it to the finals again this year; winning it too. The UNBC hockey team plays best when fans come.out to sup- port them. Look for their sched- ule (which includes a game in the new Multiplex) in the Fitness Cen- tre, and come out and cheer the Gold. -by Jason Morris Halloween Movie Guide Continue frim page 13 It’s true that Halloween isn’t as fun as it used to be: getting your bag of candy ripped off by the bigger kids and having your vampire cape catch on fire because your best friend gets a little close with his sparkler. That’s why watching a few scary movies can bring back some of the excitement. Remember though, to never forget about issues like the environment and political correctness. Maybe after the movie then, a costumed protest of some sort would be in order. by Jason “Friday the 13th” Morris to be or not to be a mascot The question has been asked many times over the last few weeks, “What will be the Mascot of UNBC?” Let’s do a little reflection. . . Last Spring a contest was run to assist the Mascot Com- mittee in establishing the UNBC Mascot. From the entries three possibilities were shortlisted, one of which was chosen based on the contest criteria. Upon fur- ther investigation it was discovered another Canadian University had the same Mascot. In discussions with that University it was recently determined that UNBC would not use that Symbol as our mascot. As a result the committee has elected to reopen the contest and is attempting to collect as much input from our students as possible. We have listed a few of the better choices for our Mas- cot on the accompanying ballot form. We are asking all students to select their favorite. Please notice that there is also three blank lines that have been left for your suggestions. We have also included a comments area for the substantiation of your choice. Once you have completed the form, place it in one of the Mascot Boxes located at the Students Service Office, Student Society Office, the Fitness Center office, and the Cash- ier in the Cafeteria. All forms will be collected from the boxes on Novem- ber 3rd. The information gathered will assist the com- mittee in making a final se- lection which will be an- nounced once approved by the President’s Council.
