bs : _ Over The Edge —_—- November 13, 1996 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The University Senate is inviting the UNBC Community to submit nominations for Honourary Doctoral degrees and nominations for the bestowal of the title of Friend of the University of Northern British Columbia to be awarded at the 1997 Spring Convocation Honourary Doctoral degrees These awards will be given to no more than three recipients in recognition of distinguished achievement in scholarship, research, teaching, creative arts, public service, or of significant contribution to the life of the University, the province, or nationally or internationally. Last Wednesday Brian Cole and John Stevenson, Chair and Vice-Chair of your Northern Undergrade Society respectively voiced some of the concerns and requests of the student body at the Presidents Council Wednesday, October 13. The bulk of issue discussed were ones that were brought to the attention: of the Student Society office as well as other complaints and concerns from the student population. Some of the concerns of the students, seemed more trivial than others but are no less important. Concerns like the regular changing of burnt out light builds and _ the immediate replacement of broken windows were some of the common queries that your Chairs went to bat for. Other of the more simple student concerns were clocks in the hallways, water fountains, a three hole punch in the library, and more Staff Credits Editor-In-Chief (Unpaid) Paul Berard Arts and Entertainment Editors (Unpaid) Jes Burkitt Brandi Baker Business Manager (Unpaid) Sheila Wanner Photographic Editor (Unpaid) Travis Allard Copy Editor (Unpaid) Vince Yim. Writers (Unpaid) Vince Yim Lauren Bacon John W. McFetrick Contributors (Unpaid), Jodie Feist designated quiet study areas. They also brought up the unfair pricing around the school. John and Brian brought up some common academic orientated issues regarding everything from _ the developments of a Dean’s List toa VISA machine in the registrars office so tuition can be paid over the phone. Some of the ideas set forth were to have an academic incentive program put into place, to place those with high GPA’s into classes before those with lower GPA’s. They have suggested a _ teacher evaluation by the student be put into place to make classes more challenging and to help develop critical thinking. Many of the concerns the students have aren’t as easily solved though and take time and money to complete. Some of the more complex for the purpose of generating money for the student society in the hopes of lowering student society fees. The Student Society brought forth the idea of being recognized as a legitimate group so that they have use of the Educational Media Service (EMS), Computing and Telecommunication Services (CTS) and other University services. One of the most complex concerns of the Student Society is the long plan of leasing land from the University in the hopes of building a Student Union Building, maybe even one with a pub! The presidents Council meeting was a success with issues that are important to the students being brought to the attention of the President’s Council of the University by The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Northern Undergraduate Student Society.
