Children are one of life’s great mysteries. When a baby is born, all it can do is eat, sleep and make messes, but if that baby is yours you will think that it is the cutest, smartest thing that you ever saw. It doesn’t make any sense. | know because | have a three year old daugh- ter who | love more than any- one else on earth, even when she is sick and has just thrown up all over me and her bed and everything else in the room. People who don’t have chil- dren of their own will never understand. These childless people will look down on par- ents. In their internal mono- logue they will berate parents of children who have tantrums in the mall saying to themselves, “I would never have a child who did that. We parents of toddlers know that someday these childless people will know the joy (and frustration) of trying to get a child past all the rides, candy and toys of the mall in order to get a few things for them- selves. It is no wonder that many mothers hate to shop, even without their children, years after these terrible experiences. Sometimes | wonder why people would want to have children at all. There are many reasons, both financial and physical that children are demanding. One of the most compelling reasons for me as a woman to not want children _ isthe inconvenience of preg- nancy and the pain of child- birth. | was in labour for thir- ty-six hours with my daugh- ter, but now when | look back on that time in my life, | find myself thinking that maybe it wasn’t so bad. That fact alone demonstrates how crazy having a child can PIRG REFUND make you. Children take up your time, energy and resources, but when | look at my little girl pointing out the letters in her name, and learning every minute of every day, | marvel at how amazing children real- ly are. As little ones grow it is hard, becuase you get used to being needed. As a parent | often find myself wonder where my tiny baby went. At the same time | love how she grows more independent each day, and marvel with her at all the new things she can do. With each step | will have to let go of my control a little bit more, but in some ways it is good for both of us (especially potty training). Maybe it’s just the parent in me talking, or maybe children really are amazing, but even with all the negatives of par- enting, if | had to go back and do it all again, | would. lf you do not agree with/support the PIRG mandate pleased bring your student ID AND proof of registration to the PIRG office Tues-Thurs between 10:30 and 3:30.
