FURNITURE “Your Satisfaction Is Our Success” COURTENAY, B.C. paper currency where counterfeit is sus- pected?” ANSWER: In determining whether a bill is counterfeit or genuine, it is always best to secure a known genuine bill with which to make a number of comparisons. These comparisons should be as follows: Check the engraving in the faces and back- grounds. Genuine bills will show every fine detail, each line being distinct. Coun- terfeit engraving will not be clear cut, and the spaces between engraving lines will be “blocked up” or filled with ink. Check the colour of the printing inks used. The genu- ine is carefully prepared and the shade is constant and will not fade. The shades of coloured inks in counterfeits will seldom be an exact counterpart of the genuine, as the blending of colours is a very exacting task. Check the design on the border of the bill. The genuine bills are “scrolled” with a geometric lathe, a ponderous machine en- tirely out of reach of the counterfeiter. The counterfeit cannot hope to reach the exactitude of the genuine in the design, but quite often will pass a casual glance. Check the serial numbers. These figures are usually printed in red, and all the figures are in perfect alignment. The counter- feiter is seldom able to get all these figures in perfect line, as the numbers are an “‘over- print” and done by a separate numbering machine of high accuracy. On a genuine bill “plate” numbers can be found. These are tiny numbers, in an open space close to a border. The weight, thickness and pliability of the paper should also be matched, as “bank-note” paper is specially made and is not available to the public. Every sheet is accounted for. Another interesting feature of Canadian bank note paper is the use of “planchettes.” These replace the nylon threads used in American bank note paper, and the water- mark in British paper. The “planchette” is a tiny disc of pale green coloured paper, which is dropped sparsely on the paper dur- ing manufacturing processes. This tiny disc is calandered into the paper by rollers, and actually forms a part of the paper. Many people think these discs are ink spots, but they are actually proofs of the paper’s genuineness. It is also well to check the denomination numerals on all parts of the bill, as often operators will change the main figures, | neglect the small ones in the backgrou Finally, look at both sides of the bills avoid “splits,” where a genuine $10 | and a genuine $1 are split, and reglu the face of the $10 to the back of the and the back of the $10 to the face of t $1. These “get by” if presented with t $10 side up to a careless merchant. A BODY of Gurkhas began their traini as paratroops with a lecture, and were t that they would have to jump from 500 fe Shortly afterwards a Gurkha sergea approached the instructor. The men, said, thought that 500 feet was rather hi to jump from, and would prefer 300 feet. It was pointed out to him that at 300 f a parachute would hardly have time to op properly. A smile lit up the Gurkha’s fa: “O, Sahib,” he said, “we did not know tk we were going to have parachutes.” —Peterborough Daily Telegrap ‘WE AIM TO PLEASE” COURTENAY HOTEL G. W.
