Maybe it's because of stuff like the Back- yard BBQ (page 11) and all the great concerts coming up (page 28). Maybe its because of things like the UNBC rugby, soccer, and basketball seasons be- ginning all at once (Page 8). Or maybe it’s all the events being put on by campus clubs and organizations as they get into a new year (stories scattered throughout). Or, most likely, it’s because of this great paper being published every two weeks at the school. But whatever the reason, students need help. So read on! In this issue, you will learn what not to say at a wine tasting event. You will learn the vocabulary of a music snob, find non-mainstream locations to travel, and figure out what sort of mov- ies you should watch (hint: if it's black and white or is German, you're probably good. If it's both, then you can't fail). Also, in our first edition of The Guide, we profile three great coffee shops to hang out in, an essential for any aspiring beatnik. And finally, we present to you the results of the 50 most pretentious people in the world vote. It’s a slam- bang, jampacked, fantabulously exciting adventure the likes of which you have never seen! Or, you know, whatever. MAGGIE GILBERT Andrew Kurjata wonders if two bits still buys a shave and a haircut, I'm not being pretentious when I say that what you are holding in your hands may be the single most important thing you ever read, not just while at univér- sity, but your entire life. After all, what's the point of paying for an education if you can't use it to act better than other peoplé? Everyone knows that a big part of being a university student is acting horribly jaded and bored by the whole “scene”-- whatever that is. Did you ever wonder why the university was built on top of a hill? To make it easier to look down on people.* That's why we've decided to publish “How to be Pretentious,’ Sadly, it seems -Andrew Kurjata that it is becoming increasingly difficult for students in Prince George to yawn their way through life, turning up their *this probably isn't true Kei issue nnrabes two, eT itsa 7 one. CTS it at 28 pages, this is one of the most momentus issue Over the Edge has ever published. Chock full of news, sports, entertainment and more, this is the Over the Edge that we hope you want to see. Of course, it wouldn't be possible without our great new group of volun- teers. Those of you who have been contributing, give yourselves a big pat on the back. You done good. “How to be Pretentious’ is just the first of our big-feature issues coming at you this semester. Our October 11th issue will be all about the burgeoning down- town Prince George scene, so if you have a business you think the world needs to know about, let us know. Even more importantly, October 25th will be our spotlight on the local music scene. If you are a local artist in any genre, or know of one, contact us. We want this to be the most comprehensive guide co PG music ever made, so we need your help. : Also, you may have noticed that we've been giving attention to clubs at UNBC. We want to keep this up. If your club has an event coming up, or you just want to attract new membership, either write something up yourself or contact us an we will write something for you. It’s a great way to get noticed, Finally, just another reminder that this a volunteer-run student newspaper that you own and control. If you have something to say, say it. Just because you write in once doesn't mean you will be forced to do so again. But of course, once you. find ut how easy it ixyyou'll want vo do it all the time. Opinions, reviews, and news are always welcome. And as always, if you have an announcement, question, comment, or com- plaint, the office door is open to you. We're located in the Wintergarden across from the pub and beside the radio station. If you want to avoid walking, try over- the-edge@unbe.ca. See you next time.
