- 25 - (e) STANDARDIZATION A detailed program of sampling procedures is required to ensure reliable results. The membrane filter method and procedures have varied over the past few years throughout the continent and needs now to be updated. This would ensure that the effort is placed on control and not in endless confrontations between industry, inspection authorities, and union representatives. In order to accomplish this, it is suggested that a collective meeting with Workmen's Compensation Board, Department of Mines, and various other regulatory bodies and industry be organized to establish detailed sampling procedures and methods. (£) OTHER SAMPLING 1. GENERAL Recognizing the fact that little is known about the background dust loading the amount of asbestos in the air (including > 5u fibres) and the inaccuracies of the membrane filter method, it is suggested that a detailed sampling program commence correlating total suspended particulate, total respirable dust, total asbestos dust, and fibre concentration. The reason for this program would be threefold: = to determine and get a better picture of the total environment that workers are exposed to; = for the purpose of correlating a gravimetric procedure with fibre concentration for the future reduction or illumination in the membrane filter sampling as a control device; - for the determination of effective enclosures. 2. EQUIPMENT It is recommended that a "lo-vol" sampler be purchased for the above program with the required accessories to sample suspended particulate and total respirable dust. If this instrument does prove valuable then further consideration should be given to purchasing more for use in stationary sampling locations throughout the mine and mill.
