SIZE OF MOOSE HORNS 133 but they have again begun a still farther southward migration. How far they have spread down towards the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway on the east side of the Fraser River, is not yet known positively, but they are well to the south of Quesnell Lake. On the west side of the Fraser River seven or eight head of moose were seen close to the Chileoten River some time last winter, which is the farthest south so far recorded in that neighbourhood, In spite of the fact that there are so many moose in this Province, it has never had much of a reputation for this species of game, and most of the sportsmen who want them go to Eastern Canada, or, if they desire excep- tionally fine trophies, to the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. To the big-game hunters who come here moose are usually a secondary consideration ; they are attracted by the accounts they have heard of sheep, caribou, mountain goats, and bear, and yet—at any rate in the northern portion of this country—moose are more plentiful than any other species of game. There are parts that are stocked with them, even to the full capacity of the food supply. As far as size of moose horns is concerned it has to be conceded that the Kenai Peninsula at one time stood out head and shoulders over any other part of the world, and the probability is that it does still, though not nearly to the same degree that it did some years ago; that region also used to have a greater abundance of these animals than anywhere else. Ten or fifteen years ago moose with horns that would measure 70 inches in width were comparatively common in that country. It was from there that the record head of 78 inches was obtained, and it was from there that Reid obtained his magnificent specimens. These latter used to adorn the walls of the old Union Club of Victoria; and amongst them were, I believe (I never actually measured them), two sets of antlers that went 76 inches and 74 inches, and one or two others almost their equal. To obtain anything like such heads nowadays would be most exceptional luck,
