unbe lifestyle february OL 2011 - Over the Edge The Responsibilities of Social Committee Caitlin Croft Tells All JARROD WEISNER UNBC LIFESTYLE What are you studying right now and was it your first choice? I’m studying Commerce and either a major in marketing or HR, completely undecided on which though! It was my first and only choice, as I do not know which field of work I want to work in. I believe commerce is very applicable topic to many disciplines in life. What do you like about being on student council, and do you enjoy being involved with residence life administration? Honestly, I think the best part has been meeting new first years. As a returning student, you tend to hang out with people you already know, and it’s nice to be able to help out new students and making new friends. As for resi- dence council, I like the idea of having input on the hap- penings that affect everyone in this aspect of student life. What is your job as social committee director? As vice president of residence council, I am responsible for the social committee which creates the semi-formal and other social events in regards the budgeting and plan- ning. Why do you think some students are hesitant to be more involved? I think like in high school, there is astigmatism associ- ated with the “coolness” factor of being involved with a student council. You’d be surprised at how many people believe that residence council is directly associated with the RA’s, because residence council is for residents by residents. We are allotted a certain amount of money by Residence and this is our money to spend. This money isn’t taken away from us, and is completely separate from the RA’s and other residence administrators. What sort of things does the social committee plan? Semi-formal and Casino Night are our two major activ- ities. Our Halloween haunted house was also a project we undertook these past few years. We sometimes have smaller social events, but these are mostly seen in posters in residence on a week-to-week basis and may check. If you had to give a breakdown for newcomers of what these two major events are, how would you describe them? Semi-formal is a charity party that welcomes all ages. The majority of people in residence are probably first years who are underage, and the idea of going to a party off campus, downtown, as well as attracting overage students with a bar. Casino Night is a gambling awareness night, in fact. It is to create the notion that gambling is a problem for many people, however in this regard, it can teach you how to be fun and hey - “Know your limit and play within it!” Right? If you were looking to become more involved with social committee or any type of volunteer- ing through UNBC in regards to these upcoming events, where would you go? We are always welcome to newcomers — everyone! Even if this is just to figure out how the meetings run in an open forum and free speech environment, the amount of fun we have expressing ourselves and talking during these short meetings. If anyone would want to get in contact with me personally regarding any volunteering or interests, my contact information is croft@unbc.ca. What is your favourite food on a lazy Saturday evening? The two things that come to mind are homemade pizza and a bowl of popcorn. This may or may not be at the same time... TAKES,ONE, CLASS OUICKMeMme CORT STUDENT COUNCIL MAKES DECISIONS Casino Night and Semi-Formal JARROD WEISNER UNBC LIFESTYLE ark your calendars! On the evening of Wednesday, January 25, Mi« Residence Council was alive with the sound of music and themes and hardcore shouting. Rising above the voices in the room was Residence Council President Kealy MacFarlane, slamming the gavel and producing results. Theme ideas thrown around the room for semi-formal included sunglasses and hats, cowboy boots and hats (I sense a theme?), and some suggestions of a kickback to “enchantment under the ea.” After votes were settled and minutes-taker Chanel Lewis had com- pleted her furious button-punching job admirably, they came to a conclu- sion: Science Fiction! All proceeds from this charity-based event have yet to be allotted to a specific foundation, however suggestions included YAPP and The Burns Lake fire victims.
