1 ver T By: Kathleen De Vere On January 9th, the fourth annual Battle of the Bands rocked out UNBC. Sponsored by NUGSS and 94X FM, five local bands competed for the coveted opening spot at the 8th Backyard Barbecue next September. The bands were judged on factors like origi- nality, stage presence, musicianship and overall presentation, in short, how much they rocked out the numerous’ students and members of the community that attended. The first band that played was the After Dinner Pinners, whose blend of radio friendly rock warmed up the crowd nicely. They played well and appealed to the older members of the crowd by throwing in their popular radio single. The second band to take the stage was Disdain; a metal band that appealed to the younger crowd’s aggres- sive tendencies while pelting us with Pantera and Slayer styled riffs, generating a large mosh pit as a result. After Disdain came local favourites Floored, who were anticipated to win the event. With the addition of DJ Weasel on turntables to their lineup, Floored deliv- ered a great set with tons of enthusiasm and _ talent. Floored’s sound is along the lines of popular rap-metal bands like P.O.D, KoRn, and Limp Bizkit, so they were accessible yet edgy enough to satisfy a crowd that craved metal.
