MEN BANISHED By Joe Delarande "Many men tried and many men died". Well, not necessarily died, but definitely banished as the UNBC FREE-BLADES Fencing, Club held their first tournament on the weekend of Dec 3/94. The Free-Blades_ club, which has met only on 6 . other occassions, ended this semester with a tournament. Of 15 or so fencers, 9 wre able to take part in this gruelling event destined to go down in history as not only UNBC's and the Free-Blades first (of many) but also as one ‘fencer's most humiliating moment. The tournament format included a round robin seating event and a modified double knockout event. Two round robin pools (A and B) were duelled with 5 and 4 fencers respectively in each block. Mark Kissinger emerged undefeated through the B-block while rookie Ryan Schroeder was the winner of the A. Ryan, along with. The double knock-out division saw the young upstart Ryan fall out of the A- side to the B whole Nicola battled her way undefeated and relatively unchallenged through the A-side. Ryan then went on to bout against the veteran blade of Nicola in the tournament finale. Although Ryan would have to defeat Nicola twice in order to win, Nicola pounded the young upstart into submission in one bout by a score of 5 to 4 thus proving feminine superiority over all men (fencers). Congratulations Nicola and all the other fencers who took part in the event and let's hope it gets bigger and better in the future. The club will _be ! recruiting new members in the next semester and invite, rather challenge, anyone to take up the blade. Look for signs in the new year.
