Bae Io Cc. CASSIAR SAMPLING PROGRAM In 1971 Cassiar commenced a regular sampling program using the midget impinger for total respirable dust. particles. Prior to this, samples were - _ taken randomly by Cassiar and the Department of Mines since the inception of the Cassiar mine. i In late 1974 Cassiar followed suit with the rest of the asbestos industry and replaced the midget impinger method with the more specific membrane filter method of sampling and analysis according to the U.S. method. The program consisted of sampling designated locations using the continuous sampling (mobile) method. That is, a technologist traversed fixed locations with the pump and filter. The sample duration was 10 minutes. Over 60 locations were designated as sampling locations covering the mine and mill. The sampling program commenced every two months (bimonthly). In January, 1976 the Environmental Committee was formed and at that time a union representative was chosen to work in conjunction with the sampling program. In November, 1976 on a trial basis the union representatives completed the survey under the direction of the Environmental Department without our direct involvement. This worked out quite satisfactorily. No time weighted averages have been taken at Cassiar other than by the governmental inspector and lately by the Environmental Department in assessment for this report.
