Then, after prices had started a fairly
steep slide, came the final shock. The
Russian Government started dumping
Sable on the New York market at a price
roughly one quarter that which Sable had
brought the previous season. Sable is just
as suitable, if not more desirable for rich
chokers, ete., than any North American
fur and the Canadian furs had to give
way.

The fur game is a gamble!

Once I had committed myself to the
game by the purchase of a considerable
amount of fur, rumours beat about me
that prices of furs were going down.

Now, when you have something on
which it is rumoured the price is going
down, the normal human reaction is to get
rid of it and let somebody else take the
loss in price.

GLoomy PROPHECY

I went in a small boat to a neighbouring
town, where there was an old established
fur-buyer who paid good prices for furs.

The way of the trapper is rough and dangerous, and not along frequented highways. Here a trapper
in the Coast Range walks a natural bridge. A slip aught mean death for a lonely man.
