Page 6 Jdnuary 1989 Cassiar Courier A FAMILY CHRISTMAS Families, from pre-schoolers to grandparents, were in- vited to attend our “Family Christmas” at 6:30 p.m. on ‘Thursday, December 15, 1988. In each room our teachers were sponsoring a number of different activities, designed for “children” of all ages. Parents accompanied their children to the rooms and ac- tivities they chose and participated as a family in the ac- tivities found there. Some of the activities were as follows: In Kindergarten Miss Taylor sponsored different acti- vity centres suitable for younger children. They painted a Christmas picture, listened to a story or had some fun with Christmas puzzles. In Grade One, families joined Mrs. Vickery for Christmas carol singing and enjoyed her piano music. The Grade Ones also made a short presentation. In Grade Two, Mrs. Hyde assisted in making Christmas cards or writing that very special letter to Santa. . In Grade Three, families designed their very own Christ- mas wrapping paper. You could personalize your presents by wrapping them in your own creations. In Grade Four, Mrs. Creyke helped create a special felt Christmas tree decoration. All materials were provided. In Grade Five, Mr. Beck and some of his students were making Christmas cards. The Grade Sixes entertained with a series of Christmas videos that they wrote and produced. There were some great actors and actresses featured! The Grade Seven classroom was the scene for making Christmas decorations under the guidance of Mrs. Yakiw- chuk. Bread dough ornaments, mobiles, and Santas were featured items. f Mrs. Smith had three different activities set up in her room - you could listen to a Christmas story, make a mobile, or have some fun with making your own Santa. Mrs. Beck was reading Christmas stories in the French Room. Santa was on hand in the library for a chat. At 7:30 we all gathered in the gym for refreshments and then some carol singing. The finale for the evening was a short performance by our school choir. THE FIRST CHRISTMAS In our entry way before the holidays was a beautiful mural made by our Kindergarten students. It depicted the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth and is exceptionally well done. Congratulations, Miss Taylor and students, on an excellent project! SPECIAL THANKS It is the time of year to remember the people who make our lives more pleasant. At this time, on behalf of the stu- dents and teachers of Snowridge, we’d like to say a special thank you to our support staff. To Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Beck, Mrs. Stratton, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Carter and Mr. Whalen, we’d like to express our appreciation for the hundreds of little things you do to make our school life run more smoothly. Thanks for keeping our little problems from turning into big ones - and for helping us survive the Christmas rush!! BIOLOGISTS VISIT The highlight of the last month was the visit on November 25th of two biologists from the Provincial Museum in Vic- toria. Wayne Campbell and Ervio Sian delighted our stu- dents with presentations on Marine Life and Owls. The students sampled delicious morsels of seafood and also examined owl pellets to determine what owls ate. The experience was entertaining as well as educational and we would welcome these gentlemen back to our school at any time. Mr. Waldera’s photos of this event are on display in our trophy case: in the main hallway, so please drop by and see them. : PERFECT ATTENDANCE The following students were given an Attendance Award Pencil by Mrs. MacRae because they didn’t miss a single day of school during the first reporting period. Congratu- lations, everyone - and let’s see if we can’t give away even more of them with the next report cards. The Grade Seven Class would like to thank Mr. Yakiw- chuk (no relation to their teacher) for his interesting pre- sentation on electricity. They enjoyed his visit very much and-were pleased that he took the time to answer their many questions. , Other “energetic” activities included a visit to Watson Lake for volleyball, participation in our Community Bazaar to sell ornaments, not to mention their Christmas wrap. Keep that energy flowing, Grade Sevens!! GRADE ONE DISMISSAL TIMES Just a reminder to parents of Grade One students that be- ginning in January, students will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m. instead of 2:30-p.m. Congratulations, Grade Ones, on reaching another milestone on the way. to growing up!! BONES WANTED! Miss Taylor’s Kindergarten students need chicken and/or turkey bones. They tell me it has something to do with a dinosaur project. If you can help, please bring or send your bones to school early in the New Year. IN AND AROUND CASSIAR SECONDARY SCHOOL PACIFIC RIM TOUR I am very pleased to announce that David Lanphear has been selected as Cassiar Secondary’s representative to the Pacific Rim tour of China which will take place in late March and early April of 1989. David was selected from six applicants who each had to do a project on China and do an oral presentation before a three person committee comprised of Mr. van der Pol, Mr. yan der Kamp and Ms. Kuechle. CHRISTMAS CONCERT On Friday, December 16, the students and staff of Cassiar Secondary participated in a Christmas concert organized by Mrs. Trask. Groups and individuals involved in the program included Mr. Trask’s Consumer Education stu- dents, Mr. Beck’s Science 8 class, Mrs. Trask’s Choral Music class, the Cassiar Secondary staff who thankfully only sang one song, and of course, Santa Claus. FAMILY LIFE PROGRAM Last year you may remember that students in grades 8-12 had a minimum of ten hours of a compulsory program en- titled “Family Life”. This program will be offered again this year to all students in grades 8-12 with a slight revision in that students in grades 8-9 will receive a 10-hour program, while students in grades 10-12 will receive a 4-hour program. The 1988-89 program is a “sequel” in that the lessons and the videos are new and not simply a repeat of the 1987-88 program. We anticipate that the program will commence at Cassiar Secondary in late January. BOB WILSON ® PERFECT ATTENDANCE I would like to congratulate the following students for having perfect attendance, including no lates, from Sep- tember 6 to December 12: Allan Artico Jennifer Becket David Lanphear Lisa Lanphear Sharon Carlick Patrick Ryan Chad Clark Sonia Saro Francis Jacob Jose Stump Vlado Kovacic Eric Verret Christina Kwan Steve Vidovic ° HAPPY NEW YEAR On behalf of the students and staff of Cassiar Secondary, I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one all the very best in 1989.
