That the fast dwindling reserves of potent illicit whiskey were not to be renewed. Coast-To-Coast SENSATION Like avenging demons khaki-clad officers ranged the valley, descended on dives, joints, cribs and gambling hells, seized the liquor and destroyed it, smashing ornate bars, mir- rors and equipment. In the depths of purple: shadowed valleys they smelled out hidden liquor caches, spilled the whiskey in the moss, raided perfumed brothels and gave rouged and painted harpies a one-way ticket from the Pass. Tried on a charge of trans- porting contraband liquor, Steve Picarello, the dare-devil driver who'd started all the trouble, was fined a hundred dollars and released. A fever of excitement swept the West as the day of the trial drew nigh. Pictures of the beautiful twenty-two year old Lassan- drea girl smiled from front pages of news- papers from coast to coast, arousing an in- terest in the case that had not been equalled in decades. The frosty morning of November 25th saw the courthouse and streets of the erst- while cow-town of Macleod packed, and people streaming in by wagon, saddle-horse and automobile from surrounding villages and ranches. Wearing a tight-fiting black dress trim- med with scarlet, and entirely self-possessed, Florence Lassandrea entered the court, kissed some of her friends, waved to others and remarked with radiant confidence: “Don’t worry—I'll be with you soon.” Then push- ing up her bobbed hair with a slender hand she gazed calmly about her. Less at ease, Pic avoided the curious gaze of the court and hunched down on his elbows with eyes fixed on the ground. ““EMPEROR” BREAKS DOWN As the widow entered, heavily veiled, and told in broken sobs her version of the killing, a strangled cry of agony broke the hushed silence. All eyes swung to the dock. Over- come with emotion, Pic had broken down completely and, his eyes swimming with tears, was dabbing at them with a handker- chief. Over the objections of the defense counsel nine year old Pearl entered the witness- box, satisfied the Judge that she knew she would “go down below” if she told a lie, and proceeded to give her evidence. In a straightforward, childish way that carried deep convicition she told how she had seen her daddy murdered. Dramatically she lifted herself on tip-toe and pointed a small accus- ing finger straight at Florence Lassandrea. “That's the lady,” she lisped, “who shot my daddy!” A gasp of horror was cut by the stricken cry of Florence Lassandrea. While Pearl was led weeping away Sergeant Scott arose and with the impact of hammer blows de- livered one smashing piece of evidence upon another. Florence Lassandrea was “the lady with the red tam” whom Pear! had seen fire the fatal shots at her father. A red tam found in her room along with five .32 Dominion cartridge shells was produced as evidence, along with a loaded .38 automatic she ad- mitted leaving wedged between the cushions at Mrs. Gibeau’s. While Florence sat, a piteous figure, her poise completely shattered, the Sergeant read the statement she'd given police at Leth- bridge. Pic had received a telephone call saying that Lawson had shot his son. Be- side himself with anger, convinced that his son was dead, Pic had leapt into his car and ———— Harte-Andrews Paints LIMITED PAINT MANUFACTURERS AND DECORATORS WALLPAPERS ESTIMATES FREE Factory: 1302 Wharf St. Phone G 5822 Retail Store: 711 View St. Phone G 4713 VICTORIA, B.
