What version you see of something is very important. I’m not trying to take sides on the sub/dub debate; | just want to talk about the differ- ences between manga to anime adaptations, and what happens when that anime is brought over to the North American market. First rule: Forget any ‘edited for T.V.’ versions of anime. | learned this lesson when | FINALLY got to sit down and see the original version of Escaflowng. | had seen the Fox Kids version a couple of times, and | wasn’t terribly impressed. | didn’t have much desire to see Escaflowne, but the real ver- sion blew me away. Amazing art, no stills, no repeated footage, incredible insane bad guys, and an amazing soundtrack by Yoko Kanno sum it all up as excellent. Even the voice talent is amazing; the seiyuu (voice actors) are so full of energy and life. You can tell that they spent big wads of money on this series. The Fox Kids ver- sion cut out everything that was great, and then slaugh- tered Kanno’s score to add insult to injury. The original is a masterpiece. What else can | say? Go see this now you fool. GO! Second Rule: If you like the show, read the manga. I've seen ‘Oh My October 8 2001 “eAbreaet Senctiowe’ evsmns rt Goddess!’ the T.V. show, and I’ve read Kosuke Fujishima’s original manga too. The show is passable, but it does not do any justice to Fujishima’s wonderful art, wry humor and his character designs. The same goes for ‘X1999’; The movie was confusing at best, but the manga is beautiful and engaging and it comes with the bonus that it actually makes sense. You can get both the ‘Oh My Goddess’ and ‘X1999’ manga at your local comic book store, and they are well worth picking up. Final Rule: Don’t expect the manga to be much like the anime. | love the ‘Ghost in the Shell’ movie so much that as soon as | found out that | could order the manga | began to froth at the mouth in anticipation. So when | finally got the manga | was pretty surprised to see that the whole mood, storyline and even some of the characters were completely different. | love the deep philosophical approach that Mamoru Oshii used in the anime, but Masamune Shirow’s manga, with it’s more upbeat, but it is no less philosophical, is just as good. They are both incredible, but for different reasons. So what will | sum up by saying? For the new otaku, don’t bother with any North American edit, then if you like the show--find the manga! It’s well worth it. Tune in next issue! Fun with Kathleen is going to try not to use toilet humor!
