Then the other boys in the team saw our predicament and threw themselves into the harness. Narrow EScApPre Slowly we surged ahead, feet slipping, lungs bursting and harness as taut as a wire. Snowshoes were almost the boss’s undoing as the swift gurgling waters clutched and writhed around him—drag- ging him under the impassive unchanging snow. The long Cassiar type snowshoe impeded his violent struggles to get free of the ice, but with our frenzied efforts, the toboggan finally heaved ahead, haul- ing the master out on safe ice. Streaking for a clump of trees the con- stable quickly unloaded his sleeping bag, whipped off his freezing clothes and popped into the eiderdown. We lay in the snow patiently. Presently he emerged, grabbed some dry twigs and in a few seconds had a fire going. Within an hour he had a comfortable warm camp, while we lay on a bed of spruce boughs. The following day we resumed the trip, none the worse. During the following summer, poor old Uncle Rye developed an incurable twitch of the head, and eventually had to be de- stroyed. Brownie and I were the sole survivors of the original team of 1936. That autumn, Const. Purdy was re- placed by Const. Faryon, and so Brownie and I went out to the civilized world with the master. On October 15th, 1944, we left our beloved Dease River home by automobile over the Alaska Highway. At Fort St. John we boarded a horrible thing called a train. Finally we landed at Burns Lake where we stayed for quite a few months. That winter there was an epidemic of distemper amongst the dogs in town and unfortunately Brownie contracted the dis- ease. He lay for over a month fighting for his life while Const. Purdy and _ his wife gave him every care possible— sometimes far into the night. But, alas, 3rownie never recovered and he lies in an honoured grave near the police quarters there. As fine a chum as dog ever had. Eventually the boss was transferred to North Vancouver, and I was put on pen- sion. So there’s not much to do now— just look rugged and romantic when strangers come around. A newspaper reporter came one day and interviewed me, took some pictures of the boss and me shaking hands. Maybe you saw us last February in the Vancouver Sun? To crown my old age I was presented with a lovely litter of pups recently by a beautifully trained German shepherd dog with a most romantic background—but that’s another story. For myself, I’m quite content to bask in the sun and dream of adventures in the far away Cassiar. Photographs in this article taken by Const. J. W. Purdy, Sechelt. “LT ONCE knew a war worker who smoked ten packs of cigarettes a day for several years and then gave it up at a minute’s notice and never touched a cig- arette again.” “How come?” “He was sitting on a barrel of powder at the time. and a match dropped through the bunghole.” _ Brighouse Lumber & | Fuel Co.
