Cheapass Games: An unorthodox alternative to Parker Brothers By Andrea Larson © The makers of Cheapass Games have come to two conclusions: “[games] cost too much, and they are at some level all the same”. These two ideas led to. the formation of Cheapass Games, a small gaming com- pany devoted to making new games that don’t cost too much. Each Cheapass Game comes with the essentials, which include the board, cards and a rulebook. All the dice, counters and the like can be bought separately. The idea is that almost every- one has the basic pieces needed for a board game, so instead of buying a new set with every game you can invest your money and buy one set. Packaging the pieces with each game is something akin to “bundling a can opener with a can of beans”. A classic Cheapass Game is Devil Bunny Needs a Ham. In this game you try to avoid being knocked off a building by a psychotic bunny who thinks he may get a ham if he can knock you off the build- ing. Devil Bunny Needs a Ham is, “quirky little strategy game that plays surprisingly well’. Another fun game put out by Cheapass is Unexploded Cow, a card game that com- bines mad cows from England with unexploded bombs in France. It is your mission to make money exploding cows in your fields while liberating French towns along the way. The impor- tance of your mission is great, “so round up your herd, march them through France, and set them loose behind the Cordon Rouge”. Cheapass also has free games on their website. These games are essentially just a list of equipment in combination with a new set of rules. These games include Ceiling Fan Baseball, Lunch Rush and Roll Out the Gun Barrels. Most of the free games found on the site have been contributed by fan of ‘Cheapass Games.
