Page 14 May 1988 Cassiar Courier CRITICAL NOTES *:+ I recall not that many years ago when buying an album, looking at the cover and listening to the music within was the total musical experience - then came the video revolution. Suddenly.you were privy to the image of the singer dancing, prancing and generally trying to emote the meaning of the song - for many this turned out to be a rather embarassing experience, not the least of which belonged to the viewer. This new ‘art’ form also was responsible for propelling certain performers to stardom based solely on one song and a video image - they were, if you will, photogenic and provided a sort of singing photograph. Witness the band A-ha, if ever there was a ‘video- band’ it was these boys and not far behind with a harder edge was Bon Jovi - young men with long, moussed, bleached hair that projected a ‘new’ pretty boy image. What seems mote ironic is that this image has proved both palatable to young male and female adolescents - the girls turned on by the image accept the music and the boys turned on by the music accept the image. The images appear to contradict the norms of appearance of — most of these young people - the bands under such names as Poison, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister (these are the real names) often appear in tight tights with make-up and often are prettier than some of the girl groups. I venture to guess that if these boys hopped down from the stage and strutted into town they would be thrown out by their curly locks. But put a guitar in their hands and let them shreik and scream and a star is born. A bird of a dif- ferent colour suddenly graduates to the status of poster on the bedroom wall - no wonder the mothers don’t want to clean the rooms. If this does not confuse the buying public enough the other media-pop stars changes images and moral stances faster than their spandex tights. In the ‘older days’ we had Elvis who went from ‘bad boy’ to his term in the army and came out ‘choir boy’ and now the parents loved him but this image was not as difficult to swallow. Elvis did like to sing church music and his pom- padour hairstyle projected an image that was male and not ambivalent in its sexuality. Madonna has attempted to change her image from ‘boy toy’ as her belt buckle proudly used to proclaim to respected wife/actress. Her biggest image problem is her marriage to brat-pack member Sean ‘please don’t take my picture or Ill break your nose’ Penn. Sean Penn recently back from the pen: George Michael has recently made a 180 degree turn from dropping his preppy partner from Wham and his vanilla- IMAGES IN VOGUE B. Nicholson white boy image to his new image which resembles a brooding young Marlon Brando in the classic leather jacket. We read that this image is closer to the real man - what was the former? and which is the butterfly? I guess it just comes down to your taste. The music is conscious in its closeness to black R & B and therefore the need for an image that projects a tougher, more masculine image. George’s new songs deal with sex and relationships in a more blatant manner - but is this real or just imitation? By far the most disturbing image to assail the public in the last year is the ‘new’ Michael Jackson - gone is the handsome black face of the album “Off,The Wall” and here is a pasty-white face of the “Bad” album. Plastic surgeons have had their way and created an image that is less etheral and more spooky in appearance - this is not Diana Ross or even one of the Supremes. A four year old upon seeing the video for the title track “Bad” commented “J thought he was a boy.” I guess out of the mouth of the child the truth rang true and how can you explain why a man allows his face to be mutilated to the extent he blurs his sexuality. Who could possibly buy the image of Michael Jackson as a former street tough back from college with the old gang to rob a poor im- migrant. I’m surprised the gang members didn’t attack MJ but of course he broke into song and of course the ‘magic’ began - was this guy serious? ‘Pretty’ tough stuff. What disturbs me more about this particular piece of media shlock is the subliminal message it sends out to all young black America - whiten up that skin and get tid of that wide nose - those distinctly black features. Is the message of white supremacy and standard for beauty even being projected by the currently most popular black male vocalist of this time and if so why? This standard is aimed for even in the black female vocalist area - Whitney Houston without the aid of plastic surgery (to my knowledge) still is a fair-skinned black woman with chiselled features closer to the white stan- dards of beauty than black. Is this image more palatable - to the white buying public or is it what the merchandising powers believe we desire? Aretha Franklin and Anita Baker are essentially better song stylists than Whitney but you can safely bet she will sell the most records - she has the better image. Her singing style even with its gospel touches is essentially closer to white than black. So the image sells the music and the gullable public buys the media campaign and whatever messages go along with the package - the record companies get rich, Province of > x British Columbia MINISTRY OF FORESTS & LANDS NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS Sealed tenders for the following work will be received |; by the District Manager, Ministry of Forests & Lands, General Delivery, Dease Lake, B.C. Is what I see outside Spring? I was worried that we might be giving summer a pass this year, but thanks be to God! He has taken mercy on us yet again and given us another break between winters! Speaking of seasons, I know it is well past Easter, but I heard such a tremendous explanation for Easter events by Pastor Holmquist of Watson Lake that I thought I would share it with you. As you may know, the New Testament is a ful- fillment of the Old Testament. In other words, the his- torical events of ancient Israel are also parables describing the spiritual principals we find written a little more clearly in the New Testament. A balanced viewpoint of Biblical doctrine will. therefore have. considered Old and New Testament events. Naturally then, to examine the meaning of Easter, I would like to start in the Old Testament, with a look at the first Passover. At this time the Israelites were slaves in Egypt and had cried out to God to save them. God saw their misery and sent Moses to ask Pharoah to set the people free. Pharoah refused, even after repeated warnings and plagues were sent his way. The final plague was the death of the first born in every household. The Israelites were spared from this plague by sprinkling the blood of the lambs from their passover meal on the sides and tops of the doorframes. (Thus their homes were ‘passed over’.) Think about it! It was not any deed or misdeed that caused the death, it was by birth only. The lamb’s death was a substitute for the first- born’s death. © It is not by anything that we do either that condemns us to death. “The wages of sin is death.” (Ro- mans 6:23), “‘we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden they became slaves to sin. In the slavery system anyone born to a slave is also a slave. We too were born into sin. Period. Therefore we either die ourselves or we sprinkle the blood’ of the Lamb of God on our doorposts, and ‘accept His substitutional death for us. (Jesus then overcame that death because he was sinless.) Since everyone dies a physical death you might wonder how the Lamb of God could die in our places. Well, the Bible tells us we are eternal beings. Death is separation from God: Theréfore if we have not sprinkled the blood of Jesus on our doorposts we will be eternally separated from God. So, how do we sprinkle the blood of the Lamb of God on our doorposts? 1 John 5:11,12 tells us, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who MONEY! MAKE YOUR MONEY | ¢% WORK HARD FOR YOU! METROPOLITAN has been helping Canadians achieve their goals of a financially secure future for over 175 years. We believe in Him. “For whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have ever- lasting life.” (John 3:16) And how do we believe in Him? By believing that He truly is God the Son of Man, and by believing that what He said is truth. “Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31,32) Friends, Christ in us is our hope of glory. (Colos- sians 1:27) When you believe in Christ you become God’s temple and God’s Spirit lives in you. (1 Corinthians 3:16) It is then easy to see how His death could be a substitute for our death. So on that first Easter when Jesus was crucified, He died and was buried. He descended into Hell. On’ the third day He rose again from the dead according to the scriptures and is seated at the right hand of God. Be- cause He was sinless, He could overcome death and He made it possible for us to accept His death as a substitute for our own. We have a choice as to where we want to spend .eternity. The choice has nothing to do with how good we are (or aren’t). We are born into sin. Do we want to become eternally separated from God or do we accept the death of Jesus in our place? What is your choice? When I think of Easter, I am amazed that God would love us so much that He allowed Jesus to die that terrible death in order that a wretch such as I would be offered the gift of eternal life: The thought humbles me completely. esso dealers SCHEDULE Monday - Thursday open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday - open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday - open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CLOSED SUNDAY Cassiar, B.C. 778-7383 Gem & Gold Has Special Gifts for A Special Mother’s Day SUNDAY 3 MAY 8th y 4 B + ” MS POSIT eee a 3 "ag eee 5 35 3 gg B = Eh Ree geese SEE eet ee es I EEO ig idl OME CPE OE, P & W Services 283 Carmacks ; 778-7776 % Sr i BOER > i BEER i i ORR i BEER lis
