* By GEGILE CLARK * OU’VE PROBABLY heard of Y the man who could “whip his weight in wild cats.” Well Jimmy Dewar, predatory animal hunter for the B.C. Game Department, tried it once. I'll tell you about it later on. First you’ve got to meet Jimmy himself. Rated as tops among Van- couver Island’s cougar hunting fra- ternity, he lives at Extension, near Nanaimo. When he’s not out on the trail of a panther, he supervises train- ing of departmental dogs. Although some game wardens have their own dogs, the departmental kennels are at Extension. I had heard a lot about Jimmy Dewar, so I visited him the other day and spent an interesting few hours learning all about the big cats that take an annual toll of a lot of our deer. Deer that hunters thought to put in the pot. Jimmy is of Scottish parentage, a 200-pound six-footer, and a real out- door man. When you shake hands with him you get a hint of that physical strength that made him shake hands with a cougar a few years ago. in the Bush You didn’t get a deer on your last hunting trip? Part of tt probably went into the stomach of Felis Concolour, B.C.’s tawny bush assassin who kills his deer all year round. Here’s what the B.C. Game Department ts doing about it. At Extension, near Nanaimo, the B.C. Game Department runs a special training school for cougar hounds under the supervision of Chief Predator Hunter Jimmy Dewar. Dogs are trained and sent out to game wardens and predator hunters in the field. Compliments of Les Williamson HELLO FELLOWS! Don’t Forget We DO Fix Your Sealed Refrigerator 3051 Kingsway, So.
