COW BAY loaded and towed up a swiftly running river in shallow draught boats, for many miles into the heart of the wilderness. Again my services were required in case I should have to take charge of one of the short red men, or perhaps a renegade white man hid- ing far from civilization. I was placed in a little log structure, where I occasionally was called upon to perform my ministrations. Some of these resulted in a long trip by flatbottomed river scow, then by sailing schooner back to the same settlement on the mighty river, where my charges were delivered to the white man’s justice. But each time I was taken back to the wilderness by the stern faced man who had charge of me. VALENTIN DAIRY Pasteurized Milk Summit Ice Cream Phone 657 C) PRINCE RUPERT, B. C. FOURTEENTH EDITION As the years went by, my services were called upon less and less. New companions arrived, whom I regarded as upstarts. They were so smug and civilized with nickel plating and fancy gadgets. I was too homely and ‘brutal’ some said. Why? I had played my part and done my duty well and truly. I was a little shaky around the joints perhaps, but I was just as stout and strong as ever. Years passed by. The heat of summer and the intense cold of winter did not bother me. I was becoming old through disuse and neglect in the back of an old shed. One day, many years later, a young man in khaki uniform with green shoulder straps and shiny leather belt was searching among the old debris in the shed, when he came upon me and my isolation. At last I had found a friend, one who could recognize that I had played an important part in the world of yesterday, and that I had a story to tell. So I once again made the long journey south and reached the capital of this vast territory. I was examined and handled with respect. Now I could rise above the new chromium upstarts, for I was given a place of honour on the walls of the institu- tion where young men such as the one who had found me, take their training. It has been a long trail from Woolwich and nowadays I am accorded all the interest and speculation customary to articles of historic interest and tradition. And why not? In my small way I, too, am an Empire builder, who did the things I was called upon to do. “SHOULDER STRAP” DETAILS POLICE WORK Drawings and photographs depicting the work of men who maintain law and order in outlying sections of the B.C. coast and interior are featured in the latest issue of THe SHOULDER STRAP magazine of the B.C.
