Page 2 | Cassiar Lions Summer Festival The Lions of Cassiar held their THIRD ANNUAL SUMMER FESTIVAL on July 20, 1975. After the wet weather on the preceding days of Friday and Saturday, it was doubtful if they should carry on with the Festival, but as it turned out the weather cleared up and the sun came out. Of course there was a fairly brisk breeze blowing but at least the breeze kept the mosquitoes away. A good crowd turned up to take part in all the festivities as you can see by the pictures. The Barbecue of beef with salads and baked potatoes was all devoured before the end of the day, along with hot dogs, doughnuts, coffee and pop. There was sure a hungry crowd; I guess all that fresh air and sunshine make everyone hungry and of course all that beer had some: thing to do with it also. The games of chance added some colour to the day and the large plush dolls were a great attraction for the milk bottle throw. There are always a few gamblers for - the crown ยง anchor and bingo games. There were alot of contestants for the novelty races of throwing raw eggs and the nail driving contest for ladies. The pillow fights were hilarious, especially at one point when the log the: two men were. sitting on broke in half, leaving the 2 men in a bewildered daze. The log was quickly replaced and the pillow fights went on, with the girls putting on a good show too. I don't know where they get this idea of women being the weaker sex. The tug of war was quite popular, infact it was so popular that each team wound up with 25 pullers and Ed finally gave up and disqualified the whole crew. The big event of the day was the canoe race with four teams entered and it involved a team of 6 poeple, 2 girls and 4 men. One of the girls had to run from the park down to the lake where the 4 men had to take off with the canoe on a 2 mile course around the lake, then the second girl had to run back up the hill to the park. The giant raffle for the canoe was held and the lucky winner of the first prize was Mr. Brian Murdoch. Second prize - liquid refreshments was won by Mr. V. Fiorella and the third prize - fishing rod & tackle was won by Mr. J.L. Mugridge. As none of the three winners were at the festival, we do not have a picture, but congratulations fellows! The novelties closed off with the pie eating contest This was not one of those delicate affairs where you use a fork and one piece of pie. For this affair you had a whole cream pie with lots of topping and you ate it with your face alone, 'Look Mom - no hands'. Needless to say the participants had whipped cream from the top of their head to half way down their chest, but from the looks. on their faces, the pie must have been good. Thanks to the girls from the Arena Committee for their help in operating the hot dog and coffee stand. We would also like to thank Mr. Schneeberger of W.S. Electronics for the use of his loud speaker and walkie talkie and to Lion Bill Rattray for the use of his trucks. Thanks to all the Lions for their efforts and particularly the Chairman of the Festival, Lion Hans Bilger.
