artly-erected night igloo and the re- maining baggage lashed tightly to the komatik to prevent it being whirled away in the fierce blasts. Frantically Silas wielded his copper snowknife while Doak and Woolams fitted the last snow-blocks in place. Safely esconsced, at last, within the snowhouse they waited impatiently as for six long days the storm raged with such relentless fury that nobody dared venture out lest they be caught in the grip of the howling hurricane and whipped away to certain death. As suddenly as it had arisen the eale abated, in time for them to get COPYRIGHT PHOTO Otto Binder, Hudson’s Bay trader at Tree River, who fell before the bullets of an unknown slayer. a lucky shot at a prowling polar-bear, thus adding a ton of badly needed meat and dog-feed to their fast- diminishing supply of food and dog- feed. At last the welcome sight of their puny one-roomed barracks at Tree River loomed through the ghostly half-light. Not only had the prisoners failed to give any trouble, but Ali- goomiak, always quick and cheerful, had lent a ready hand hitching and unhitching the sleigh-dogs, unloading sleds and building the nightly igloo, R.H.SAWYER Manufacturer of LUMBER x REVELSTOKE, British Columbia TWENTY-SIXTH EDITION till Doak, always partial to Eskimos, had taken a liking to the lad. Since there was no cell in which to confine the prisoners, and to shackle them in the biting cold was out of the question, Doak assigned them routine work, catching, and hauling seal for dog-feed, mending sleighs, and doing odd jobs around the barracks. At night they slept in their fur shingabees upon the floor. As the sun emerged from its winter hibernation, a huge cold copper disc, and commenced to circle the pale blue sky and seals emerged from their holes to bask on the melting sea-ice, Woolams departed with Tatamagama and Silas for the Eskimo seal-camp, eight miles to the westward, to join Clarke, the Hudson’s Bay inspector, shooting seals to supplement the dog- feed. Meanwhile Aligoomiak con- tinued to go about his work at the barracks with a smile until he’d as- sumed the role of Doak’s helper and personal servant. The only two white men now left at Tree River were Otto Binder at the Hudson’s Bay post a hundred yards across the frozen bay from the barracks, and Corporal Doak, himself. On the morning of April Ist Doak rolled out of his bunk and called to Aligoomiak, who was chewing the soles of his mukluks soft, to throw them over. The Cogmollock grinned and did as he was bid. With a frown of annoyance, Doak tossed them back. “Chew ’em properly—and chew ’em soft,” he growled; “these soles are hard as boards!” With ill grace Aligoomiak did so, picked up the five-gallon slop-pail and proceeded to carry it outside. Suddenly the handle parted, dump- ing the contents on the floor. Pushing the Eskimo roughly aside the Cor- poral ordered him outside, seized the broom and proceeded to clean up the mess. “What's wrong with the kid,” de- manded Otto Binder that evening when he dropped over for his usual round of poker . . sulky, don’t he?” . seems kind of Downie Street Saw Mili Lid. * Manufacturers of All Kinds of Lumber and Slab Wood. * REVELSTOKE WHEN VISITING REVELSTOKE ALL COMRADES ARE WELCOME AT BRANCH No. 46 CANADIAN LEGION, B.E.S.L.
