MARKETING — A NEW DIRECTION (Continued) Administration Cassiar’s Sales Administration staff has been trained to deal with all aspects of export and import regula- tions throughout the world. During 1977 Sales Administration has as- sumed full responsibility for the documentation and control of the shipment from the time the order is received until it is delivered. The control process includes 17 areas of financial and administrative activity, each designed to move asbestos fibre to customers at minimum cost and in good condition on arrival. To facilitate this task a computer system has been installed to handle all internal and external source information. To aid customer transactions the Marketing Division has established a sound working relationship with inter- national banks, and has, as a result, re- duced by a considerable amount the time required to process financial paper. Transportation Plans are now well advanced to have a common carrier, Arrow Trans- portation Systems Inc. handle the en- tire transportation of asbestos fibre from the mine to Vancouver. The new system involves moving container loads of asbestos by specially- designed truck-trailers transport from the mine to the British Columbia port of Stewart, and on to Vancouver by tug and barge. The truck fleet will operate on the Cassiar-Stewart Highway, 24-hours a day, five-days a week carrying two containers per trip. Each container will carry up to 20 short tons of shrink-wrapped asbestos fibre. This method of packaging will minimize spillage and reduce environ- mental problems. A storage and handling facility, at the mine, will serve as the Company's distribution and shipping point. All packaging, shrink-wrapping and con- tainer loading will be done here. 22 The containers will be moved by truck-trailer transport to the port of Stewart where they will be transferred to a barge. The tug-barge system will operate year-round between Stewart and Van- couver. Approximately 80% of the an- nual production will be handled in this manner: the balance will be trucked to a railhead for furtherance to custom- ers. Return trips will carry fuel oil and normal provisions and supplies re- quired by the mine and its community. On arrival at Stewart the oil and provi- sions will be transferred to tank trucks and transporters for delivery to Cassiar. At Vancouver the asbestos will be loaded into deep sea ships for over- seas customers or into trucks or box cars for the Canadian and United States market. 1.
