Telegraph Creek: Sunday after Christmas, December 27, 19706. Mass - ll a.a. Confessions before Mass. Christmas is for Christians... Long nights and dull days prompted the pagans of early Rome to celebrate the retum of the Sun in the last days of December. Christians had discovered a new "Light of the World": Christ. They celebrated His entry into the world while their pagan neighbours wor- shipped a Star. As we plunge once again into a paganised world Christians will soon find themselves celebrating the coming of the "Light of the World", while pagan neighbours eat, drink and make merry during a season of festivity that vaguely commemorates "Baby Jesus" and "Santa Claus”. The nriessage of Christmas like ail revealed mysteries is understood in the silence of the heart, a heart that seeks salvation, peace and Light. Sal- vation is experienced in prayer and the reading of the Scriptures and deepened by meditation; fulfilled in living the Christian Life. Some points to ponder during this coming Christmas and some questions to ask are: “why did Christ choose poverty rather than riches?" "Why did he choose obscurity rather than fame?" "What kind of awsome fear did the shep- herds experience in sceing Christ for ae ‘the first time?" "Why do we not feel the same awe each Christmas?" The answers to these questions will be sought by all faithful Christians for all eternity, but a pre-occupation with them will make Christmas Christian!
