4 September 22, 2010 + Over the Edge TIFF Wraps Up 35" Year Let the Oscar Buzz Begin HANNA PETERSEN NEWS EDITOR The Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF, ended on September 19" after an eleven day run. This marks the 35" anniversary for the annual film festival. As TIFF may be Canada’s most prestigious film festival, celebrities and film makers flocked north to Toronto to promote themselves and their films at venue locations all over Toronto. Although the festival has been giving more time and attention to more mainstream or Hollywood movies, it still maintains a deep focus on independent and foreign films. A film being well-received at the festival means big things as the festival is a launch pad for “Oscar Buzz” and occurs just before awards season. Many of the films that premier at the festival do go on to gain Oscar nominations or even win, like Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire last year. This year the festival included 258 feature films with more than 200,000 people in attendance. TIFF also supports and promotes Canada’s little national cinema along with Canadian writers and directors working on cross-border projects. One such film that premiered at the fest is Daydream Nation, a sleepy little story staring Kat Dennings who is most memorable in her role in Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. Daydream Nation tells the story of a city girl in a small town who becomes involved in a love triangle involving her high school teacher. It is both written and directed by young Canadian director Michael Goldbach and was filmed just outside of Vancouver, BC. The festival also premiered a quirky dark comedy entitled Super. The film stars Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office) who plays Frank, an average guy who pretends to be a superhero in order to win back his wife played by Liv Tyler. Wilson’s superhero name is Crimson Bolt and he wields a pipe wrench to accommodate for the superhero powers he lacks. Canadian darling Ellen Page plays Libby, a comic book store clerk and Frank’s energetic sidekick. Super appears to be darker and far quirkier than the recent average-joe-to-superhero movie, Kick-Ass. With a combination like Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page this film is sure to be at least entertaining. TIFF alum Danny Boyle also introduced the world with another instalment. His new film, 127 hours, is quite a departure from the feel-good Indian adventure that was Slumdog Millionaire.127 hours follows the true story of a hiker, portrayed by James Franco, caught in the Utah Mountains who is forced to amputate his trapped arm in order to survive. If 127 hours doesn’t sound clausterphobic enough, TIFF also showcased Buried, a thriller starring Ryan Renolds wherein he is buried alive for the majority of the film. Another notable film, especially since Zach Galifanakis is so popular right now, is Anna Boden’s It’s kind of a Funny Story. The film seems to be a slightly warmer version of Girl Interrupted with Zach Galifanakis as an added bonus. More specifically, the story follows a clinically depressed teenager who is admitted to an adult psychiatric ward. It seems like it might be kind of a funny movie, or at least your average coming-of-age movie with a lot of heart. Theatrical releases for the numerous feature films and documentaries showcased at TIFF usually follow in the weeks after the festival. However many of the films are only available in select cities for theatrical viewing. People living in one-theatre towns will most likely have to wait for the more eccentric films to trickle finally trickle their way down to DVD.
