carried out, the sergeant noticed for the first time that Brogan’s tunic was blood- stained. “What's this?” he queried. “Man, you're hurt. Why didn’t you tell me?” “Yes, he winged me with one of the first shots,” Brogan answered, “but it’s only a flesh wound and nothing to worry about.” The sergeant, however, made Brogan take off his coat and rendered first aid from the kit in the police car. As the ambulance arrived to take the body away to the morgue, the sergeant told Brogan to get in and run up to the Emergency Receiving Hospital so that his wound could be dressed properly. Brogan, however, did not want to go to the hospital and pleaded with the sergeant to let him finish out his shift. “Look, sarge, I'm the only man who saw the other fel- low,” argued Brogan, “and this dressing that you fixed is swell. I don’t feel any pain at all, and Pll go to the hospital as soon as my shift is over. This is my chance, sarge, let me finish the job.” “Seems to me that you've already done pretty well, but it’s alright with me if you insist, as we are sure short of men,” replied the sergeant: Brogan resumed his beat. His conscience troubled him less now. Brother officers had praised his courage in following two armed men from a lighted street into a darkened lane and then shooting it out with them. What a story he would have to tell Jimmy when he got home in another three or four hours. The hospital could wait until after he had seen Jimmy. During the remainder of his shift the patrol sergeant came once more and asked him how he felt. He also asked Brogan for a few more particulars about the incident. No, Brogan told the sergeant, he could not be sure that he could identify the other man, he had only seen them as dim shapes in the darkness of the lane. Before leaving, the sergeant told Bro- gan that there were two vacancies on the Detective Branch, and that no doubt he would get one of the promotions. Brogan felt that his twenty-two years had not been in vain. Jimmy would be so proud of his dad now, and the extra money would enable them to get a little better apartment, or perhaps a house. The remaining few hours dragged all too slowly for Brogan. He felt like a youngster, who, for the first time, finds himself at the top of his class and can’t wait till he gets home to tell mom and dad. Finally seven o'clock came around and Bro- gan rang in on the call box. No relief was to be sent out as the beat was only manned at night. Brogan jumped on a passing street car and hastened home. When he arrived, the flat was empty. Well, Jimmy sometimes was a little late when he stopped with some of the gang at a lunch counter for a cup of coffee. His arm did not pain very much, so the hospital could wait. As Brogan started getting breakfast the telephone rang. It was unusual to receive calls so early in the Brogan household. It must be Jimmy to explain why he was late. It wasn’t Jimmy, it was the desk sergeant. “Brogan, come down to the station right away, will you?” Brogan could not object, though he did Page One Hundred and Thirty want to be home when Jimmy came in. Must be something about last night, or they would have waited till he came on shift again. Ten minutes later Brogan entered Police Headquarters. Several patrolmen were standing about, but instead of the usual cheery greeting they gravely acknowl- edged his wave. The desk sergeant, instead of addressing him from his chair, got up, walked over to him and grasped his un- injured shoulder. “Brogan, I'm sorry to have to give you some bad news. It’s Jimmy.” Brogan anxiously replied, “What's happened, sarge? Has there been an accident at the plant? Tell me!” “No, Brogan, not at the plant, but an accident there was,” replied the sergeant, voice a little husky. They all knew how Brogan loved his only son, and they all liked honest Tom Brogan. “Tt was down at the railway yards that they found him. A fast freight—but you better let Clancy tell you about it. He was the one who found the lad,” and the ser- geant turned away at the anguish in poor Brogan’s eyes. Slowly turning to his old friend, Pat Clancy, Brogan said, “Tell me about it, Pat. Is he dead?” Avoiding the other’s eyes, Clancy spoke. “Yes, Tom, I’m sorry to have to tell ye this, but Jimmy’s gone. He died in me arms as I was taking him to the Emergency Hospital. The poor lad’s last thoughts were for you, Tom. He told me ye were the grandest dad in the world and that he was sorry that he would not be around to see ye get yer promotion.” Then Clancy turned away for fear that the other might read read in his eyes the secret that no one must ever know. He had promised dying Jimmy. And at the bottom of the river lay the gun he had found in Jimmy’s hip pocket with one shot fired.
