out. Although again being worked by a few ambitious men, this prop- erty was found impossible to work on a large scale, due to the spotty and undependable character of the veins. All types of placer operations are carried on in the district, from the hardy lone miner, working his claim with pick and shovel, to mech- anized open-cut, hydraulic and un-' derground workings. TRAPPERS AND HUSKIES Trapping is the other main indus- try of this district, and is carried on by Indians and white trappers over large trap-lines, many of them very difficult to reach. Choice mink, mar- ten and beaver are the most profit- able catch, but many coyote, wolf, fox, wolverine, squirrels and weasels are also brought in to market, along with the ever popular muskrat. Tra- vel by the trappers is still largely by dog-team, as it was when the first trappers and prospectors mushed q Beath Motors Ltd. It is still a common sight to see a trapper coming to town, his four or five husky dogs pulling a sleigh piled high with furs, while cars pass on the same road, and the mail plane drones overhead. Although far from large centres of population, Atlin had its tourist trade also, in the past, and has many hopes along these lines for the fu- ture. Hundreds of tourists each sea- son, largely from the United States, used to make the scenic trip from Vancouver to Skagway, by rail to Carcross, thence by White Pass pad- dle wheel steamers on Tagish and to mathe bei 2S Seas Ry Dog teams on Tagish Lake, near Atlin, B.C. However, this lake steamer route, for passengers, was discontin- ued during the late war and has not been started again, as regards travel to Atlin. SEEK ROAD TO OPEN SCENIC WONDERLAND A better hope in this regard is the building of a road connection with the Alaska Highway. Only about 65 miles of road is needed through comparatively easy road building country. A survey was made during the summez and fall of 1946 and construction has al- ready begun through arrangement with the Dominion Government, as part of the road is through the Yu- kon Territory.. This road will not only fulfil a great need for this iso- lated community, but will open up an area of wonderful scenic beauty abounding with possibilities for th; big game hunter and fisherman. Fist are plentiful in the numerous lake; and streams, while moose, mountain sheep, goats and caribou roam_ the hills where men are seldom if evey seen. Mining, also, will receive added impetus from this road, as many more creeks will become accessible to prospectors. Since the days of ’98, the B.C. Provincial Police have maintained the law in this rugged country, sev- eral men being stationed at Atlin and the nearby Discovery camp dur- ing the boom days. However, for many years now, a lone Constable has been the only representative of the law at Atlin, handling both Police and Game Department work, traveling many miles by small boat and dog team each year to settle dis- putes and investigate complaints which may arise in this northern outpost.
