I was fired after, but out of gun ange from the Seashell lodgings. I had to steal soiselessly through the southern passage, where vn both sides the Sleimen Indians were camping ‘nd then with all our might we pulled away, it veing about 2 o'clock in the morning. In the norning of the 31st I had a good n.w. wind nd the two Indians S-chueinoch and Shunnah eft me, taking their own canoe which was hid in he woods. THE PLACE CALLED HOME 200 Elegantly Furnished Rooms 60 Rooms with Private Bath Moderate Rates John Tha First-class Service WELFTH EDITION New Westminster and stopped there for the re mainder of the night, as utterly exhausted it was not possible for any further In the morning of the Ist of April I was at New Westminster delivering the body and reporting to you. “I have to mention that before I left on the expedition I promised each of my three Indians 15 dollars, and at the Seashell 15 blankets at three dollars to the Indians, which would take Taetak to S-chueinoch 1 blanket, to Shunnah 1 dollar, to the klootchman of Taetak 1 blanket, 3 shirts and diverse small articles and to a klootch- man which had given me one mat for to put over the body one half of a dollar, making the whole of my expenses exclusive provision and canoe equal to $100 or 20 pounds sterling. “I can not conclude my report, Sir, without mentioning the good and brave behaviour of the Indians I employed. They assured me, be- fore starting, that they only went with me because they loved and respected me, that they have greatly endangered their position towards the numerous relations of Taetak of which they do expect deadly enmity and that they for their own safety perhaps are obliged to leave their us to go ~ home and go to their relations in Burrard’s Inlet. I promised them, to bring all this to the knowledge of the authorities and assured them of the protection of the government. I further promised them a letter of recommendation with the purple seal on it as they have been for the time employed in Her Majesty's service. I rec: ommend, Sir, a letter of recommendation to the following Indians: Lwiechelt, Stavanak, Kyro- hampton and S-chueinoch of the Squamish tribe, Shaetlaw and H-shakap of the Sleimen tribe. I have further to mention the good behaviour of the Seashell and Sleimen Indians in submitting with readiness to the arrest of Taetak and I beg of you to acknowledge this in a letter of recom- mendation and satisfaction to the chief of the Seashell tribe of the name Lamarchharchae. “But I am grieved to say that very little knowledge of the power of the government and of the proceedings of justice exist between the Indians on the coast. With great difficulty I could explain to them the purpose of my coming and the language and authority of my warrant. They seem to attribute the taking of Taetak and the reason for it to my single self and have no idea of the proceedings of the justice of the white man’s law in this country. “Concluding my report, I beg of you to excuse the style of this writing and spelling as I am not writing in my native language. “I have the great honour to be, “Sir, “Your obedient servant, “Julius Voigt, “Constable.” * * * After an inquest had been held on the manner of Taitach’s death, Chief Inspector Brew wrote (April 8th) to the Colonial Secretary in the following terms: “With reference to the notice dated the 29th February last and signed by me which appears in the Government Gazette of the 3rd inst. offer- ing by order of His Excellency the Governor a reward of £50 for the arrest of Taitach an Indian charged with murder, I have the honour to report. that on the morning of the lst inst., Const. Julius Voigt, who held a warrant for the arrest of Taitach, arrived from Sea-shell bringing with him Taitach’s dead body. Taitach was shot down by some of the Syaman Indians while en- deavouring to effect his capture. The circum- stances connected with the death of Taitach are so fully detailed in the occompanying report addressed to me by Voigt and also in the proceed- ings at the inquest on Taitach’s body, that it is unnecessary for me to recapitulate the matter. “Voigt promised the Indians who accompanied him on the expedition some money and blankets and he also promised blankets to the Sea-shell and Slyaman Indians, all these engagements I have put it in his power to discharge. I gave him the money and became responsible for the cost of the blankets at the place where they + were purchased, the whole amounted to about $120.00. “I beg leave to recommend that the full re ward of £50 be paid to Const. Voight. He risked his life in this undertaking and I think he has justly earned it. He fully understands that the advance I gave him to satisfy the Indians will be deducted from whatever sum he may receive.
