Over The Edge Page 8 April 6, 1999 RESIDENT'S GUIDE TO ROOM CLEANING The end of the school year means that thousands of UNBC students will be packing up and moving onto summer jobs throughout British Columbia and the world. The final job to be finished after the packing is the cleaning. For the Residents in UNBC Housing this also means that, not only do you have to do your own room but ensure that the rest of your roommates are doing their part too. If your roommates don’t leave the dorm clean, UNBC will clean it up for a mere $25 per hour. I hope to provide wisdom from all my years of moving on how to clean, how to get your roommates to help out and how to pass the residence inspection. THE FIRST STEP IS TO UNDERSTAND THE HELPFUL RESIDENCE LEAFLET WHICH PAINLESS WALKS YOU THROUGH MOVING OUT AND CLEANING. CHECKOUT DATE According to this, resi- dents are to be out on April 17th. According to the floor reps, this is now April 18th. Check with Randall. INSPECTIONS This is a change from last year. Instead of allowing you the chance to touch up any- thing that isn’t up to scratch, you will receive a bill in the mail for something you didn’t even know existed or needed to be cleaned because inspections will happen after you leave. (eg The inside ef the light fixtures or the underside of the sink) Last year, Resident Advisors (RA) would inspect your room and your share of the clean- ing to make sure things were okay for the sum- mer. Check with your RA’s MOVE OUT DAY IS APRIL 17TH ¢ A move out inspection will be done after all students have moved out of the suite. Suite cleaning is the responsibility of all students living in the suite and any cleaning/damage CLEANING charges will be divided equally amongst all the occupants. The cleaning procedure hasn’t changed for a number of years. You've lived there so you clean it. Please refer to Residence handbook page 9/10. Also, please see your RA for a checklist of problem areas that may require extra attention when doing your final clean up. WHAT THE BOO SAYS The Residence Handbook states that cleaning must be done to an acceptable stan- dard. It is up to you to make sure that clean- ing duties are divided up equally. (or you buy beer for the only room- mate willing to clean up two semesters of partying.) e The Residence Cleaning Standards brochure will assist you in dividing up the cleaning responsibilities. « All residents must check out at the housing office and turn in suite keys, mailbox key and parking pass. Note: Refund process for non-returning students can only be | initiated when student has checked out at the Housing office. to see what is accept- ably clean and then write Housing a nasty letter when you get the bill in the mail. e All student mail received during the summer will be “returned to sender” Note: Please leave a forwarding address with the Registrar's office for any UNBC mail outs. RETURNING KEYS Don’t make the mis- take of turning your keys into your RA’s. I left early before the housing office opened and ended up paying $70 because my keys didn’t make it to the office before the last checkout day. If you can’t drop your keys at the housing office, leave them with «| CCU MEY. (NGte te Note to Residents with UNBC lounge furniture: Save yourself money by packing Housing: get a mail it down to the Agora. You will be charged for facilities having to come and get it. slot) Mail is always the bane of a student's existence. You cannot get Canada Post to forward your mail because UNBC does the final delivery. You have to notify all your friends, magazine subscriptions and BC Tel where you will be living for the summer. e Any suites designated for REVISIT during the last inspection will be re-inspected during the week of April 12". Please ensure that any items noted on your copy of the inspection form are corrected before this date to avoid charges on your account.
