Thomson calls the Sidney Detachment. It is 14 miles from Victoria and covers an area of about 20 square miles. The district is essentially British in ways and customs, and its folk are philosophical and content with life generally. The Nanaimo, Duncan and Courtenay Districts are all similar. Nanaimo, with its detachments at Ladysmith and Qualicum, represents an industrial, agricultural and summer resort district. Industries are lum- bering and coal mining; agricultural activi- ties include dairying and general farming, and famous Qualicum Beach presents the chief tourist attraction. Duncan District includes the widely- known and beautiful North Cowichan Val- ley and well-stocked Cowichan Lake, which has brought ambitious rod casters from afar. Here again lumbering and farming support the community. In and around this district are many colourful figures of yesteryear. Many come from well-known old English families, and to them the Cowichan Valley represents heaven on earth for those who have worked and earned a rest. In all of the aforementioned districts and detachments, excepting Ganges, where the boat is the sole means for law admini- stration, there is little out of the ordinary in the way of police work. Motor car and motorcycle patrols are the order, with little variation. Good roads provide compara- tively easy access to practically all points where the law must reach, and conventional offices for police routine are maintained. Travelling further north on the Island, however, the picture alters slightly in some respects, while in others the conditions are unchanged. In the Courtenay District are found more mountainous regions, and the policeman sometimes has to abandon his car for a pair of skis or snowshoes to conduct investigations. Mount Becher and the Forbidden Pla- teau are bidding fair these days to become a haven for winter sports. At Forbidden Plateau Lodge, for instance, the winter sportsman finds little wanting in the way of entertainment. It is also a favourite Island centre for such spring and summer pastimes as hiking and riding. The City of Courtenay is policed by the B.C. force, and is headquarters for the district. Other detachments are at Cumber- land, Campbell River, Alert Bay and Port Alice. Cumberland is another Island coal mining centre, while Campbell River, as the home of the famous Tyee, has already been referred to. At Alert Bay and Port Alice the marine fleet is called into service, as at Ganges. The activities of this branch of the B. C. Police is dealt with elsewhere in this issue. With such varied means of stretching the law into some of the isolated corners of Vancouver Island it must be admitted that Courtenay District offers some of the great- est diversity in the Province.
