set her feet on a strange path, and one that was to wind down to her final resting place in the muck of an Essex farnryard. After the week-end at Bourne- mouth, the captain—who no doubt by this time had sized up the extent of Camille’s investments—suggested that they slip away and live together —forever. Fascination for Dougal stifled his partner’s conscience. It was another step—and she took it. So a few weeks later she left Elgin Crescent with the good wishes of her fellow boarders ringing in her ears. Of course she let it be known that she was leaving to be quietly married to her very attentive captain. As Mr. and Mrs. Dougal, the happy pair went to board with a Mrs. Wisken, in the little old world town of Saffron Walden, in Essex. It’s Elizabethan shops and houses, made it a delightful spot to spend a honey- moon. Unfortunately although the “sroom” had charm—of a sort—he had no money. Mrs. Dougal paid the rent. The landlady was told that a few letters might be re-directed to Miss Holland, for as their’s had been a surprise wedding not all their friends might know of it. Mrs. Wisken smiled, and understood. After a few months, Dougal began to think of himself as a property owner. They should have a place to MODEL BAKERY OFTEN BUTTERED—NEVER BETTERED BREAD - PASTRIES PIES - CAKES WM. And so day after day he happily cycled around the district looking for a likely piece of freehold to purchase—or rather for Camille to purchase. There was just the trace of a shadow among the sunbeams about this time—for Dougal had begun to realize that his little companion had developed a tightness with funds. She was definitely holding the purse strings, and apparently meant to keep on doing so. At last Dougal found what he con- sidered the ideal piece of property; Coldham’s farm, six and a half miles away, near Clavering. He enthused about it to his lady love, until eventually the deal went through. Miss Holland’s solicitor in London drew up the necessary papers, and Dougal was very helpful. In fact he went up to London and had the lawyer make out the purchase papers in his name. But Camille heard of this, and she quietly slipped up to town and changed the instructions. The property would be in her name. To avoid any friction, she said nothing about this to Dougal. It was on April 27, 1899 that Dougal and Miss Holland moved out to Coldham’s farm; the little spinster had sent up to London for some furni- ture she had in storage, and Mrs. Wisken said they both seemed very happy when they bade her good-bye. Dougal was much impressed by the moat around the farmhouse, and nothing would do but he change the name from Coldham’s to Moat Farm. Now Camille Holland might not have been so happy, had she known that the real Mrs. Dougal was Dougal’s third wife, the first two having died suddenly under mysterious cir- cumstances in the married quarters of Halifax Barracks in Nova Scotia. And before meeting the current Mrs. Dougal, he had brought a Halifax girl to England with him. After a child was born Dougal had cast her off, and the unmarried mother made her way back to Canada, telling her parents that her husband had “died” in England. In fact, Dougal’s exemplary army service could merely be reckoned as “twenty-one years of undetected crime.” So far as the army was con- cerned, he had satisfied its regula- tions; privately he had preyed on scores of women.
