February 5, 2001 Dr. J “Gonzo”, Medicine Wheel ( PHD ) In all honesty, i actually gave up the idea of seriously pursuing a career in journal- ism years ago. The pay was lousy, both time & energy spent considerable, & for some strange reason just did- n't seem to quite have the same sort of effect in wooing women as did say the subtle sounding ring of plugging “PHD” at the end of one’s swanky little nom de plume. More than anything though, i suppose the real reason for taking a crack at musing myself silly here over the course of the next 5 issues was the result of an especial- ly sacred little “peace pipe” passing a friend of mine & i shared just a short number of days ago. Now, before we go any furthur, it should be stated how largely for legal reasons, notwithstanding the possibili- ty either of sparking off a full- blown campus wide scandal, let's simply for the moment reefer to my young nubile & amazingly gifted UNBC female friend as “Hotbabe”. Under the city’s hazy green spell, the two of us were casually rapping out on the deck of her downtown high- rise digs when — she, “Hotbabe” that is, yelled out excitedly : “Suffering Sophia ... !!! Jay, what the HELL is that ???”.= Bewildered, i wheeled around straining to more or less focus my eyes on the black pitch of smoggy down- town sky she was frantically trying to direct my attention to. As there are few of you reading who'll likely even believe it, unless of course you happened to have stood continued on page 5... Out of all the events the motor cross free style by far affected my whole person. The stakes were high; at any moment a jump could go awry and injury or death could result. This tension made my heart stop every time a jump was attempted, especially when one of the riders wiped out. | began to think about life and how we live it. Why do such events enthrall us? Is it the cathartic effect? | mean movies, literature, almost everything that is meant to entertain has this quality. But why? Is it because our live are dull and so we must live through others? or that for a short time we'd like to feel for our- selves the mile walked in another person’s shoes? Early English novels claimed to be diverting; are we simply creating a diver- sion to escape for a while the life we truly live? Or is it curiosity? We don’t only do this with entertainment. It is an aspect of daily life. The spectators watching the dirt bikes didn’t just feel for the riders, they imagined them- selves as such. They dreamed of the dirt bike they suddenly began to desire. Or what about the times a friend walks up to a beautiful stranger and asks her out? We all envy and respect him, especially when he is_ successful. Then we all imagine our- selves having the guts to do the same. Really the ques- tion is where does the actor end and the audience Hichoel Homer Public Lectures with Michaei Horner: begin? Or are they the same? Does this affect individual- ity, when everyone is trying to be different doing the same things? Are we mere- ly products of society? just as brain washed as the last generation and the one before and so on? Is free- dom a myth? Have we advanced at all socially? Will we ever? Does it mat- ter? What matters? If I’ve learned anything, and | haven't , then here is the wisdom | impart upon you: We all must. decide what we are living for, then we must act upon this desire and make that which is important to us reality!
