entitled me to claim that I was a
member of a corps which performed
one of the most extraordinary
marches on record.”

Tackled Whole Tribes Single-Handed

Around their lodge fires redskins
wondered. South, in the land of the
Long Knives, whole troops of cavalry
rode to arrest a single horse-stealing
Sioux. But these red-coated riders
tackled whole tribes single-handed.
Single-handed they got their man and
Stamixoten—Bull’s Head, as _ they
called Macleod—meted out swift and
uncompromising justice to paleface
and red man alike.

The first Mounted Policeman to be
sacrificed in the police efforts to tame
the turbulent Blackfeet was Constable
Grayburn. Four constables, and a
non-commissioned officer in charge of
the Mounted Police horse herd, were
in camp three miles from the post.
During the daytime one man_ was
continually on herd while, at night,
the horses were driven into the fort
and stabled. Some Blood Indians,
who'd been making themselves a
nuisance by constant prowling and
begging, were in camp not far from
the police tents. On the fateful morn-
ing Constable Grayburn left camp to
take his turn on herd and was trailed
by a Blood Indian of vicious character
named Star Child, with whom Gray-
burn had had words the previous day.
When the time came for Grayburn to
be relieved, and he failed to show up
in camp, an immediate search was
made. Hanging from a bush a mile
away his companions found his cap,

and bloodstains upon the snow. At
the bottom of a gully a little further
on the searchers came upon Gray-
burn’s frozen body, with a_ bullet
wound in the back of the head. The
horse, tied by a halter-shank, lay dead
at the foot of a tree.

Despite intensive pursuit it was not
till some years later that Star Child
was arrested on suspicion but released
for lack of evidence. A year later Star
Child was again arrested, this time
for horse-stealing, and ended his days
in Stony Mountain Penitentiary.

Sneers Turn to Consternation

When Piapot’s Cree warriors circled
frightened railroad workers with
blazing guns, drove them off and
pitched the Chief’s tepee athwart the
right of way, that redskin firebrand
received the jolt of his life. Into the
seething horde of red humanity rode
a sergeant and one constable. Ordered
