CALLING MOOSE 187 what an infernal fool you were not to bring one. I may say that the need for a telescope is almost as urgent when after caribou, and to a lesser extent for sheep. It is only within the past few years that ‘“‘ calling” for moose has been practised in this Province. It was a common supposition that they would not answer a “ call ” as they will in Eastern Canada. As a matter of fact, the natives of this Province never found it necessary to acquire the art, nor had the few whites who lived up in the north. Nowadays, however, both whites and Indians practise “‘ calling’? with a fair measure of success, though it is doubtful if they have acquired the same degree of skill at it that the eastern hunters have. From what I have gathered by reading, and been told, it would seem that ‘‘ ealling” in the east necessitates exceptional skill, as the bulls there have become so wary that they imme- diately detect a false note, or too frequent or too loud calls. Though my experience in the east is nil, never- theless it is easy to understand that this is the case. “Calling? has been in vogue there for many years, and every season numbers of young bulls are called up and let go; possibly the same bull is fooled several times in the same season, so that by the time they arrive at mature age they have learnt their lessons and are not to be deceived by anybody except a thorough expert. For several seasons now I have been doing a little “ calling”? myself, and with a considerable amount of success. From what I have done it would appear that in this country it is a most simple matter to call a young bull, and by no means hard to do the same with an old one, provided he is in full ‘‘ rut” and not already in the company of a cow. In the latter case they will pay no attention to your efforts other than to grunt or grumble back at you, or maybe to thresh their horns against a tree. Under favourable circumstances almost any sort of a “call”? will produce results, whether it be that of a bull or a cow, a good imitation or a bad one, or whether the “‘ calling ” is kept up continually or at proper intervals.
