guished officer then serving in Canada.

General was appointed to command.

But the constabulary was not long per-
mitted to continue its peaceful police duties
enforcing the criminal law, taking the
census, supervising the collection of agri-
cultural statistics, suppressing the potheen
traffic, inspecting weights and measures,
registering and licensing dogs, etc. Daniel
O’Connell died in 1847. With him died
the movement for repeal of the Union by
constitutional methods and the ascendancy
of the violent “Young Ireland” party under
Smith O’Brien began.

was but prelude to open rebellion. Banking
on the well-known slowness of the army of
that time, with maps to consult and tactics
