Over The Edge Page 5 EDITORIAL October 19, 1999 It all Comes Down to Money By Nicole Larson | have found a flaw in the NUGSS constitu- tion, not a major flaw yet, but a flaw none the less. To begin my little story we have to travel back in time to this past summer. I, being overly zealous and_ really impressed with the idea of graduating a year early, decided to take courses over the spring and summer semesters. | took three courses in the Spring and three more in the Summer, bringing my total of courses for those four months up to six. | could do this only because | am an English Major with a History Minor as many others in different programs have pointed out to me. Anyway back to my story, so here | am all summer working on course work, putting in six credit hours a week per course because the semesters are half as long as a Fall or Winter semester. This is not the problem. The prob- lem occurred when | observed that | was paying $27 per semes- ter over the summer to NUGSS. This means | paid $27 to NUGSS in May and $27 to NUGSS in July. | effectually paid $54 for four months of Nico) sth ce an Undergraduate Student Society representation. It says on page 21 of the 1999-2000 UNBC calander and on page 20 of the 1998-1999 calander, “Student Society Fee: $3.00 per credit hour (to a maxi- mum of $30.00).” This effectively means that if | had taken those same six courses in a Fall or Winter semester | would have paid a maximum of $30, not the $54 that | paid. | paid almost double for a period that | know NUGSS did not do almost double and | think that this should be changed. |.do not actu- ally care about my money but | think that this should be changed either in the constitution or because it is not enshrined in the consti- tution in the NUGSS policy manual, or cor- rected in the calander, with an explaination of why if you are only at UNBC for two months you pay NUGSS the same as if you were here for four months. | know | am in the minori- ty because | took six courses over the sum- mer, but as UNBC expands and more courses are offered in those semesters this will happen to more and more people. Moral, of my little story: Take| as many courses as you can during the Fall and Winter because NUGSS really dings you in the Spring and Summer. | LETTERS : University Maintenance | have been a student at UNBC for close to 2 years. The environment is great for studying, however, the mainte- nace of the facilities is not good. You can always find a broken lock in almost all of the ladies’ washrooms. Library building is the worst, almost every floor has a broken lock (1/F, 2/F & 3/F). In addition, broken locks are found in the washroom next to the Canfor Theatre and the one next to the Cafeteria. It is causing a lot of inconvenience to the female students. Furthermore, there are at least a cou- ple of broken theatre seats inside the Canfor Theatre: Though the buildings and wash- rooms are always kept clean, no one seems to take any action to check on things. !| remem- bered the locks were broken since | attended UNBC. Last by not least is the photo copying machines in the library. There are 3 copiers on the main library floor and only one of them works. Two have been out of order for almost a month now. Though the unviersity charges stu- dents ten cents per copy (five cenis more than Staples), we often have to line up for 10-20 minutes to get the ser- vice. The university should really make an effort to improve this service. Since the uni- versity have so many Xerox copiers (more than Staples has) within the premises for stu- dents and staff to use, | would have imagined that UNBC must be a key account customer to Xerox. We should get better service from Xerox, but obviously it is not the case. Whoever is in charge, please do something about it. Students are suffering as a result of your negligence. Students Treated Poorly at Jasper Hotel Thanksgiving weekend has held a special fun for my wife and me. That’s the time of year we take off for a few days of recreation in Jasper. As_ always, before we left, we con- firmed two nights stay at the Athabasca hotel $35 per night you get one double bed, a TV, and a sink in a small but comfortable room over the bar. We arrived semi-late on Friday evening, paid for our two nights, had dinner and went to sleep. The next morning around eleven am, we returned from a walk and found a message to call the front desk. We returned the message and were told by the manager that we would have to pan another seventy-one dollars for the room or leave the hotel immedi- ately. We explained to the manager that we had paid the night clerk for two nights and were covered for Saturday already. She reiterated that unless we paid up, we had to leave. We went down to the lobby to speak with her in per- son and came across the manager poking fun at us with another cus- tomer. When she real- ized whom we were she put on an ugly face and proceeded to tell us that she knows her business and who are we to tell her the hotel’s rates. We asked for out check in slip and showed the manager that the rate we were charged was correct, and we had already paid for Saturday night. This seemed only to spur her quest on! She again told us not to doubt her managerial skills and ignored the slip showing her fault. So we left the Athabasca, pissed off, ripped off and with nowhere to stay. We did manage later on Saturday to find a room for rent in a residence, and did not have to cut the Thanksgiving tradi- tion short. This was probably the single most blatant examples of horrible service and pigheadedness | have ever experienced. Was | in Jasper? Does that town not live on tourist dollars? Suffice it to say, we will never stay there again, Athabasca Hotels ownership!
